I'm a new C.B.ER trying to get started right with good mobile equipment.I was gonna go with the new galaxy 959, a wilson 500 or 1000 antenna and either a Fatboy 800 watt or 450 Palomar amplifier. I hear "competition" amps are better becuase they have a fan and swing more watts. Can anyone comment on this possible setup or make some suggestion for a mean setup with some range |

splbass17 959 or a 696f is great start
go with the wilson 1000
i have a fatboy and have manny diff ones they are a great amp verry tuff they can take a lot of swing and you can tell them how u want the amp set full comp or 12-17 volt or tell them u want a swing box they will make for you i run my 3pill with my s45 i dead key 2 watts in and get
550 dimond watts " aka bird watts" rember if you get a full comp amp you will not see the watts unless u volt..hope this help

You say your new to this? Sounds like you know whats out there. As for the amp. A fatboy 800???? Stop. Make sure your alternator is powerful enough to handle a large amp. I take it your not putting this in a semi. My stock 100 amp alternator in my chevy will only run about a Texas Star 250 or 350 with no problems or extra add ons. Anything bigger and I need a bigger battery, caps, larger wires and cant run other accesories at the same time.
I would go with the 696f radio. I have a 959 and get lots of bleed over from all channels if someone is nearby talking. Its a good radio but needs mods like channel gaurd. Just my radio. Not heard others 959. 959 SSB is a bit on the wimpy side and drifts. If your not wanting SSB get a Uniden. My opinion is Uniden is the best AM cb out there today. |

if you talk to ANY of the builders, they will tell you their "400" version amp(which should key 250, swing 850) should NOT be used with anything LESS then a wilson 2000-IF THAT EVEN! (my astatic 3k would NOT handle 1kw PEP,never tried my wilson 2k with that power).
2 or 3pill custom box with anything less then 80 amp stock alternator should get you 125+ key & 400 swing.
4 or 5 pill custom need AT LEAST 110+ amp alternator & dual batteries to see 250 key 850+ swing.
an 8 pill is what the builders commonly call an "800". you need a 2 or 3 pill to drive THAT, so you're probably up over 200-225 amps right there. dual leece nevilles or {EXPENSIVE} aftermarket alternator(s) & multiple batteries are now required. you'll see 500+ watt key & 1700-1800 swing, at a STARTING cost of about $2k to do it right, not counting radio, antenna & any added on setup/labor costs.
a stock alternator less then 80 amps should work fine with a texas star dx500 or 667. you'll see about 150 key & 450 + or - from either. a stock alternator of 110 amps or a bit more should work fine with a texas star dx1200(150-200 key, 650+ swing), & maybe even a dx1600(250 key & 900 swing), either with at least 2 big batteries...remember both require a driver...
all output #'s depend on....
not cheap to run big watts |

Good advice so far. If I were starting out again and didn't know a lot about the radios out today, I'd pick a Galaxy 44, a 2 pill DaveMade or FatBoy and the Wilson 1000.
I personally think that would give you everything you'll need and more than enough power. Afterall, what good is all that power is nobody else can get back to you?
Now knowing what I know today and if I were starting out on a limited budget...S3 or S6 (if SSB wasn't an issue for me) a 4 pill DaveMade or 2 driving 4 and a Wilson 5000 or Predator 10k.
That's just my opinion, everyone else so far has made excellent points though... |

98 Dodge Ram here. Stock 137 amp alt. HEAVILY MODIFIED Galaxy 77, (Thanks Kevin!! ), DX 250 drives my DX 500. No problem so far and can be heard in St Augustine, 40- 50 mile from downtown Jacksonville. Oh yes!!! Lets not forget the antenna! $17.95 Radio Shack 102" steel whip!!

i smell it too, 'raker!
those 4-2879's are good for about 10 watts of carrier & 40 PEP in a TEXAS STAR. a custom will ONLY take about 20 carrier, though it will handle well over 100 PEP.
i can be heard in downtown providence with only 5 pills. and a 117 amp alternator. that's about 100 miles from here |
