Get the S-9. I want a Mag 257 but now it says out of stock until November. I really like the looks of the Cobra 200. People are saying the Cobra is not a very good radio. What a shame. Then again some say the Cobra is great. Guess its like the Galaxy debate.

Hotwire,

After talking with Sam Lewis I would guess Copper will have the Magnum 257's by Mid or late October.

Hope this helps,

I've had my Magnum S9 for about 2 months now. I wouldn't trade it or sell it for anything. I just love it. Just wish it had the nitro knobs on it. Sometimes I bring it in to use as my base, because of the adjustable echo. Very well made and thought out radio.

no where near like the galaxy debate...i hate galaxy radios, i will never ever run one again after my first galaxy...(55) how ever, when tuned properly and operated correctly, the 200 is a performer...no questions asked...but i as well run a 257 and it is a lot of bang for the buck, but then the 200 sells for 229 and is worth well over 300 the 257 sells for 169 and is worth well over 200...so its all opinion in my book....depends on what you are looking for, mobile 257 base 200...thats just me though

Out of the choices you have listed, definately the S9. Stay away from the Cobra because it is junk. It is one of the worst put together radios I have seen for awhile. Like I said the S9 is the one you want.

Goat373... I have three friends that are techs and darn good ones. They are in three different states and they all say the same thing. They all three had them and now they don't, so that should tell people something. I suspose if I had one I would say it was good also. Just my two cents.

If you don't want to have to use an amp the Galaxy DX 95T is a fine radio. I have it in my car and I don't need an amp nor a pre-amp, which was a surprise to me. The Magnums are fine radios no doubt.

I don't think you should judge a Galaxy off owning a 55. They don't really start to get good until you hit the 66 and up. The best Galaxy radios ever made were the 66,77 and 99 as far as standard radios without amps built in go. My personal choice in that line up would be the 77.

If you don't want to buy an amp and around 150 watts or so of PEP is enough for you, then buy the 95T.

If you want to add an amp later on, like blue display lights, shiny faceplate, the option of cutting the super mod on and off, built in SWR warning circuit (that is correct), 6 digit counter, the ability to run the RF gain almost completely off and still hear the distant stations 100%, super clear and loud audio from a 12 o'clock mic setting, should I go on? Then the S9 is the choice here.

Either radio you'll be happy with, and either one you choose you'll be saying to yourself a few months down the road, the one I didn't get will be my next radio...

The reason I say this is a post That Lon made From Sam

USE WITH AN AMPLIFIER

The S-3, S-9,and Omega Force S-45 and S-6 were designed to work with a 4 pill Amplifier like the Texas Star 500 or Similar Amplifier that uses 4 - 2SC2879's.

"DO NOT ATTEMPT" to run the Magnum S-3, S-9, S-6 or the Omega Force S-45 with any 2 PILL Amplifier!

Amps. And the Magnum S9

Will a Texas Star 667-v work
Palamar 300-a
Dave Made 2 pill with 2 2SC289s
and so on

Heard one of the local old timers yesterday on a Cobra 200. These guys talk on Kenwoods Icoms and Yahsoos. Anyway he just bought it from a guy he knows and trusted. Hooked it up and on low power it was at 100 watts on his Bird and says on hi power was at 210 watts on the Bird. Sounded not bad on low but hi power was just awful. It drifted everywhere too, So he turned the power down and got it to sound a bit better. It still needs work and is not to happy with it. What I thought all along and he agreed that people want to wring every last watt out of it they can. This is bad. The radio was bought and converted from Copper but when he got the radio it had no seal. I do believe if somebody buys one from Copper or any other reputable dealer and keeps there hands out of the inside, or at least is a qaulified tech to mod it, the radio should operate effecient enough to be reliable. So far I only know of 2 people who are members here and a local tech who support the radio. I have heard alot of bad reports on this rig and after hearing a 200 with my own ears I'm leaning towards the thumbs down crowd. I hate it though. I love Cobra radios and have for years. Even my 148 NWST had problems until I spent over a hundred bucks to have it basically rebuilt. It was gutted and about 75% of the parts inside was replaced with superior parts. So I have about a 4 hundred dollar radio that only cost 2 hunded brand new.

I took my M80 and changed out the 2290's for 2879's. Changed a few caps here and there, plus the box had been worked before I got it.

So far, so good.

It never hurts to ask though...

You are right if you try to get max power that we all know will kill any radio they sound like junk but if you find a good mid range on both the high and low it is a great radio my dead keys are set at 4 on low and 35 on high it will swing a pep of 220 on SSB but I didnt turn it up I just converted it and put a D-104 on it the old black one :-) and its loud and clear so yes people should keep their golden screwdrivers out of them and let good techs do the power adjustments so they get the good old Cobra quality sounds

Dave1,

I have been on my own radios since 1962, but used to talk on my Dad's radios before that. been repairing radios since late 1963. I have over a hundred radios and they are everything from tubers to hybrids to all solid state. Only four of them don't work. I also am a licensed General Class Ham. I also have a degree in Electronics Technology which I received when I was 42 yrs young. I have worked as broadcast engineer for television and radio stations. My last job before all my health problems started, was a bio-med tech for hospital. I worked on everything from phone systems, heart monitors to all the x-ray machines. I am now disabled due to 14 strokes and 4 heart attacks. I now have to use a walker to get around and right now they are working on getting me an electric scooter so I can get around a little better. I am sorry I got so long winded, but I wanted to let you know what my life has been.

I just wanted you to know that I have been around radios and know a thing or two about them
and know when a radio is junk and this one happens to be. There is a lot of people that spent hard earned money on the radio and now they are unhappy and stuck with them. You can bet, that if a bunch of guys are dissatisfied with a radio, that I sure wouldn't waste my money on it.

I forgot to say that with all the bad things I have heard and been told about this radio, I sure wouldn't recommend to no-one. Also, just because it has the Cobra name, doesn't make it the best. UNIDEN IS WHO MADE COBRA WHAT THEY WERE, NOT ANYMORE,SINCE UNIDEN QUIT MAKING THEM,
THEY HAVE DONE NOTHING BUT PUT OUT JUNK.

OK 199
Do you have a 200 or is it that you talked to a few guys about them. unless you use one you would never know the real radio just second hand information that we all know can be worthless
So with that unless you have tested one yourself Im done with this conversation with you

Dave
