I have Copper tuned S9, Texas Star DX500, and a 5'Wilson Silver Load 5/8 wave antenna. I adjusted ch.1 to 1.1 ch.19 to 1.3 and ch.40 is 1.6 I know the swr on 1 and 19 is OK with the amp, what about the 1.6 on 40?
I have Astatic 636L Wood Grain microphone. I have everything grounded. When I have the amp on and key the MIC, I start getting burned by the metal stress relief spring on the mic. Any ideas on this, besides grounds ?

Man, Someone needs to chime in on this one. I'm out there talking and I go to switch freq's and even the freq. knob was burning me. Please help soon. I have no idea on this one except for grounding, and I have everything grounded. Help me before I burn myself taking a leak.

Wildrat,
RF burns can be VERY unplesant!And with a TS500 fired up even hazardous.double and triple check all your coax for bad shield connection,especially at the antenna base/mount.what seems to be happening is your setup sees you as a higher ground potential than the car body(assuming its a mobile setup)also where are you sitting in relation to your antenna mount?check the coax for water migration from rain or carwash.Try changing coax/jumpers.try without meter inline.also try 1 thing at a time and check so you will know exactly where the problem was.I'm sure others will chime in with other points to check.
and as a side note,you can put the mic down long enough when nature calls(added humor).maybe put on a pound or 2,maybe your body mass is resonant on that frequency.(hehehe)

The only thing I have ever known to cause RF burns through the mic, coax connectors, etc... is poor grounding. |

You get burned without keying? If not why are you switching channels while keying up?
Also keep in mind that even a mondo wire from that mic screen to a 100' deep gound rod will not do a darn thing if the ground's impedance is not LOW at 27MHz, a darn good DC ground may not mean squat to RF. In the beginnning I learned this the hard way

I have a jeep wrangler unlimited, that means it's longer.The antenna is mounted on a brackett on the rear tire carrier. i will recheck things again. When it comes time for power on I will do 1thing at a time so the prob can be isolated. I have aluminum overhead mount i bought. It goes between the winshield rollbar and the center rollbar. The radio and amp are both mounted on it. I have grounded the brackett, as well as the amp,and radio to this brackett, then the brackett is grounded also. I have grounded frame to body, engine to body and frame etc. Well it is dark now, so hopefully I will wake up in the morning feeling OK. I climbed up and down the ladder several times tweeking the antenna, so I will have to see how my back is going to feel.
How did the swr readings look?
Thanks for Ya'lls help. I will ck back in later to see if there are any more ideas.

Well it's sunny outside and on the warm side but I'm working on those grounds. I think I will go ahead and run a 6ga. welding wire to my amp, maybe I will, depends on how tired I get.
Oh well, this is more like a blog.
Maybe I should start a blog, since I like talking to myself.

I am having difficulty in figuring out how to bond my jeep wrangler tail gate door, and still keep it pretty. I did find a problem there. The wire I was using to bond/ground the jeep door was nearly broken at the terminal because of movement,opening/closing. |

I ended up using stainless steel braid that is usually used for making your lines under the hood look better. It makes good bonding wire. I will go out tonight when it cools down a little and see if I get burned. I also beefed up the ground on my aluminum brackett that the radio,amp is mounted too.

know where that is. Went to a car show there. I'll be in Cocoa Saturday for the week. Ride the bikes to Daytona and back a couple of times that week. I beleive the radio is working properly now. Repairing the bad ground at the rear tailgate, and adding a better ground to the overhead mounting brackett. Nomore lighting my butt up for tonight anyway.
