I'm using a texas star dx500 with mine with no probs yet. Side band does not seem to be a problem either. I don't know which one can't be used because I only use the one I can use.

Mdiver,

Posted on Friday, January 16, 2004 - 6:47 pm:

The Following tips are Direct from Sam Lewis at RF Limited and Designed to give you 100% use of your Radio's when using an Amplifier with them.

Owner's of the MAGNUM RADIO's S-3, S-6, S-9 and S-45 Omega Force and other Radio's that will be using the TOP GUN BOARD, need to read the Following Owner's Tip's.

TIP #1

AMPLIFIER USE with the NEW TOP GUN BOARD!

NOTICE!

These Radio's were NOT designed to be used with 2 Pill Amplifiers!

These New Radio's with the NEW TOP GUN BOARD'S are designed to be used with an AMPLIFIER that has at Least 4-2879's or more, that need's NO Driver / Exciter Stage.

The Ideal Amplifier for use with the Omega Force S-45 or Magnum S-3, S-6, S-9 is the Texas Star 500 with 4- 2SC2879's. With NO DRIVER / EXCITER Stage.

These Radio's with the TOP GUN BOARD were designed to eliminate the need or use of a Driver / Exciter.

For use with other Amplifier's that Use a Driver/Exciter such as the Texas Star 667 that uses 1-SC2290 driving 4-2SC2879's you need to READ the following instructions.

Be Very careful that the Power to the Driver / Exciter is set to NO more than 4 watts and NO More than 12 watts PEP.

Otherwise you will have too much Gain going into the Driver.

It is highly recommended that you have a Professional Set these adjustments for you.

These Tip’s are to help you achieve Top Performance and help you to avoid any problem's that may arise.

As Sam continues to inform me of additional Tip's / Trick's on the RF Limited Product's, I will be posting them for the Owner's of these New radio's.

Hope this helps,

Lon

the texas star dx500 as noted above is a great choice for AM/SSB.

a 2 x 2sc2879 CUSTOM amp, as well as 4 pill and EVEN 5 pill CUSTOM will work JUST FINE with a bit of tweaking to EXTERNAL radio controls.

texas star from copper, davemade, x force/magnaforce, or fatboy-search the web...

The Dx500 works a treat with the S-9 for just under 500W PEP out on SSB and clean loud audio.
DX1600 cranks out 850-900W PEP on a PEP meter with the same set up.
Both amps need low SWR and fans running full time.
Beats fiddling with knobs and warmming things up!

Great information from Sam at RF Limited!
No mention is made as to whether the Top Gun Modulator should be left off or not....

When I spoke with Sam at RF Limited last week I think he told me that the S9 will work great with a straight 4 Pill as long as I set the DK to about 2 watts and did not engage the Top Gun Modulator. I believe he stated that with the TGMod off it would swing about 20/25 Watts and with it on, it would swing to 52 Watts. The former "mode" would provide good drive and the latter "mode" would overdrive the amp. Did I understand him correctly?

I did not order the S9/80. I got the 50W model.

Thanks!

TheHoBo,
Curious...
Do you run the 811a with the TG Modulator on or off?

cruzer, t/g off when im using any amp!! my use of the top gun is when its noisey local, and or at alittle distance from who im talking to, i use the t/g!! after i start to lose him or him me, i turn off the t/g and turn on the amp!! ive found that the t/g is really not to good for driving an amp mainly because of the excess of power and modulation?? hope this helps??
