Hey FreeBird I feel your pain.

I have a Galaxy Saturn Turbo in need of some help.

Problems:
1) The Mic Gain is not stable and will shut off leaving me with NO AUDIO at all. Even when turned up all the way with a Silver Eagle Mic it still seems week compared to my TR 696F-SSB with the Silver Eagle on it.
2) Squelch - when touching the know get a lot of static and seems loose.
3) Tone adjustment does NOTHING
4) SWR/Calibrate - Can not get it up to the set position, will only go about 1/4 of the way on the meter.
5) S-Unit Meter - Seems I get folks in at about 2 or 3 S-Units higher than my other radios.
6) RF Power at max on AM will dead key roughly 45 watts and will swing 90ish
7) SSB - not sure if they even work let alone are aligned correctly.

Now I also want and like talk back with volume control. I added the speaker I got from Copper for the 2000GTL that plugs into the ext. speaker and PA jacks - works great on the 2000GTL but does nothing on the Galaxy Saturn Turbo - WHY ??? Supposedly there is one built in but I can't hear it. Can I make it an internal talk back with volume control using the Tone knob to control the volume of the Talk Back since it doesn't work anyway?

I would really like to get this radio in tip top shape but will need some very detailed instruction as I know nothing about radios or electronics although I am careful, detail oriented and can solder well. I have no radio gadget tools though either.

Don't get me wrong the radio works, made DX contact to Delaware, NC and IL today barefoot but still deciding if I should keep it or return it for my money back.

Sinker sounds like you need to bring it to that tech by Starface. Sounds like you have some kind of problem in your audio section, along with something else. Did you buy this used?

Yes this was bought used. I listed every little problem there is with it.

Problem:
1) Believe this can be fixed, talked with a shop in NC - one of three authorized by Galaxy for non warranty repair. They said they believe an easy fix but may require some new parts, we'll see.
2) Another easy fix
3) Tone knob will be used for the adjustable volume Talk Back they are doing for me again some parts will be needed - I will like this new feature
4) Will be repaired during first hour bench test
5) Will be repaired during first hour bench test
6) Supposedly has not been peaked so we will see what the shop can do
7) SSB - USB & LSB were checked today and were very stable - will be checked and aligned anyway.

Radio looks VERY CLEAN and sounds like $100.00 to $200.00 is what all the work will run plus shipping.

I bought this radio used and paid $200.00 for it with an Astatic Night Eagle Microphone that is in REALLY BAD shape, questionable if I should even put it on a shelf. The Silver Eagle works well on it though.

I figure even if the repairs go 200 or even 300 I will have a rock solid Saturn Turbo that is what I wanted for the same price I see them selling for on the auction sites. Of course this one will have been taken care of by an authorised shop where I am sure some of the radios on the auction sites selling for this price need some TLC as well.

Hopefully the shop won't tell me it's a junker. From the audio reports I have gotten so far I don't expect that. Oh yeah they are putting an extra fan kit on it as well.

I am hoping that I will end up with a smokin radio and I don't mean one that will make the alarm go off. I am keeping my fingers crossed.

I will keep the radio and hope for the best

I used the info you sent me but only got a response from the company he works at. I can wait for him to do the work personally when he has time. Just need to get a hold of him, himself.

Took apart that Night Eagle so I could paint it and put it on a shelf. Used some contact cleaner on the contacts and re-soldered all wires. Painted the mic, put it together and it looks pretty good. Put it on the radio and that thing now works like a charm, flat smokes but picks up sound from all over the house, need to get it adjusted right so only I can be heard.

Lon, thanks again and I will keep trying for Richard...

hey sinker, the D104 is by far the most well known and popular mic for CB radios. that background noise is just the way they are. do a search on the forum and you will read countless stories of people keying up and broadcasting noises from elsewhere in the house. these mics are sensitive! all D104's will exhibit the same phenomenon. they are designed to be close talked; like one or two inches from your mouth, and the gain adjusted up from 0 just to the point where you are getting 100% modulation. lots of folks like to key them up at arms length and turn the gain way up. they will sound a bit echoey and you will hear the cat sneeze.
