The 148 GTL DX+ was manufactured in the late 80's to the early 90's. The original 148 GTL was manufactured in the early 80's. Most of the websites I've visited about the 148 GTL DX+ "F" the "F" stands for FAKE. Not sure why....but I'll bet out infamous techs could tell us why. |

The F stands for frequency counter, and are the same famous chassis as the Cobra 148/2000 GTLs.
Not sure if the newer Phillipines made 148/2000 GTLs are the exact same radio as the Uniden Grant XL, because there were several production changes between the original 148/2000 GTLs and those of the Phillipines origin.
Also the question was not about the cloned export 148 GTL DX models which are FAKE 148s.
I've no idea what years the 148Fs were made, I just know they are the same chassis (mother board) as the 148/2000 GTLs. |

The F is far from fake. It was one of the first exports and one of the best 148s ever marketed |

From what I understand there were 3 radios marketed as the 148 GTL DX in the early and mid 1980s. The first or "early" Cobra 148 GTL DX used an MB8719 and was made by Uniden with a PC879 board. Then there was the Cobra 148 GTL DX "late" which was also marketed as the Superstar 360 FM. They were also made by Uniden (PC010) with an MC145106 PLL.
Cybernet made a copy commonly referred to as a 148 GTL DX "FAKE" or Cobra 148 GTL DX-B. It's PLL was a PLL02A on a PCMA001S board.
In the mid 1990s when Cobra was making the Cobra 148F GTL they came out with the Cobra 148F GTL DX which was the same chassis as the CONNEX 4800 DXL. I've read that radio is also excellent, but it was made for a very short time.
I've never seen or used any of these radios, but I understand all of the real Cobra DX radios were good, and the cybernet clone was poor in comparison. |
