I picked up this Wilson and a gumdrop mount for 2 bucks at a swap meet and have a question about it. It's about 5 feet tall has a Wilson sticker on it but i can't read anymore that just Wilson on it. It has the adjustable tip under a rubber boot on the tip where you would tune the swr's. Well I installed it and have 1.1 to 1.2 swr without touching it across the 40 band.. (roof mounted to a gumball)
Theres a wire winding all around the antenna top to bottom and at the bottom is about 3 inches of wire with a eyelet crimped on it. I would imagine it's suposed to be going to ground.
My question is, Do I need to ground this wire? It's currently taped up and insulated. So why is it there and do i need to ground it if i already have good swr's on it? |

NO , TAPE IT TO SIDE OF ANTENNA . THAT WOULD BE A WILSON SILVER LOAD , GOOD ANTENNA . THE GROUND WIRE IS JUST USED IF YOU CAAN,T GET SWR DOWN |

Do not ground the wire unless you are having problems tuning the antenna. Just take a zip tie and tie and tape it to the antenna. What you bought was a Wilso Silver Load. I use a 5 foot one on my jeep.

Ok thanks guys. So this antenna would be more for a tool box mount in the back of a pick up truck or like on a jeep ball mount or something.
A coily type of antenna would work better for a roof mount over using this wilson top-load then huh? |

On my I have it on a mount I got from a guy on EBAY. It mounts to the rear tire carrier and extends upto the top of the tire. Then I have a heavy duty mount for the antenna. I talk skip all over, and easily have 30-40 mile range with it and the radio, and heater.
