What are the best settings for the low power pot and the high power pot on AM with TGM off? My radio is used, and I think the dead key settings have been changed.
Also, are there different power pots for the TGM at high and low power also?
With TGM on, mine doesn't drop to a 1 watt dk. It stays where it's at regardless of whether or not TGM is on or off. I know TGM is working because I get quite a bit more modulation with it on.

I am not sure, have to check mine. But I don't think it matters about the TGM being on or off. It shouldn't effect the dead key.
My radio will go down as low as 1/2 a watt and as high as 12. If you change yours, make sure to set the high setting first, then the low. |

Thx 808. I found that a couple of hours ago and printed it all out. That will come in handy, but it still doesn't say what to set them at.
I'm just wondering what the optimum settings are for AM low power and AM high power, as well as the TGM question above. |

With Top Gun "ON" the dead key will only drop to 1w DK if you turn the variable power knob all the way down. Then it will key wherever you set it and modulate full 35-40w.
With TGM "off" you have more of a linear power range..in other words set DK to 2 and it swings to 10..set to 5 it swing to 20..set to 10 swing to 35-40 
If you want to "go in" and set your Hi DK and LO DK with the internal pots then I quess you can go as low as 1w but I see no need for going even that low...1.5 - 2w is a good basement. As far as Hi power DK no dual final radio needs or should have more than 10wDK maximum if you want it to sound good/clean and last (IMHO..)

Ok, thanks Vanillagorilla. Been waiting all day for this info, but didn't see it until I got home from the CB shop. Too late, lol.
Anyway, my local tech set the low pot to 3 watts and the high pot to 15 watts. I asked him about it and he said that there is no reason why 1969's can't handle a 15 watt DK. I told him to use his best judgement, so that's what I got. He also calibrated my S-meter and RF Power meter to be accurate. I had him do a full RX/TX/PLL alignment for AM, LSB and USB as well as calibrate the freq counter.
Then I asked him if he could do anything about the RF gain potentiometer not doing anything until the 9 o'clock position. He thought this was odd and checked it out, but said that he didn't know why it did that, except that maybe the potentiometer was going bad. He put a brand new one on the bench next to it and it did almost the same thing. It began reducing RF gain at about the 10 o' clock position. Weird. Must be inherant in S9's.
Any, any further comments would be appreciated. I guess I'll go with Vanillagorilla's suggestion not to run more than a 10 watt DK. |

Glad I could help but lets wait for others to weigh in here before the verdict is delivered
My thinking was especially with the S9's ability to do 40watts I felt 10dk going to 40 sounded great and not overdriven or "flat topping/clipped"
Think of the 4:1 ratio you read about here...what better example than 10 going 40?
Try your 15DK and get your share of radio checks about 10-15mi away then turn it down to where friends say "right there!...Loud and clean"
Mine was 8DK swinging to 35...again..MY sweet spot without TGM.
As for your RF gain issue mine was the same way and likewise with my Delta Force...for what its worth I never turned it down anyways but I know people have different ways of operating...whatever works for you..
