Sonny, yeah, they are still made. Not sure where you can get one right off hand. I know of a CB shop in Nashville, TN that sells them, thats where I got mine. If you know of any radio shops in your area, check there.
Try a google search, I'm sure you can find one somewhere on the net.

Dmh:

I saw one last week on a Wal-Mart International diesel car. Couldn't believe my eyes. He had a piece of 1" x 1/4" steel about, oh, say 12" - 18" long (whatever you need to make the tip be at 13' 6" for the good ol' D.O.T.) that extended the mount point that far below the mirror bracket. It was bent at an angle at the top and bottom for mounting purposes. (say, about 1" from the end on either end) Then, to control the whip in the wind, he had two standoffs with a rubber eye-grommet at the end to hold the whip from touching the bottom and the top of the mirror brackets. I.e: a grommet at the bottom mirror bracket and a grommet at the top bracket. This was sufficient to steady the rest of the whip that protruded from the top grommet to the tip at the 13'6" point.

Very cool. I had to slow down when I passed him in my Kenworth W900 and get a double-take of the install.

I believe I will try it too :-)

I would like to see what that looks like if anyone has a pic. I am definitely interested in giving the steel a try on the old diesel car !!

I would think that you would be disapointed in a 102 inch stainless steal whip on an 18 wheeler. Too much fiberglass and then there is no adjustment on a 102 inch whip. You might be only able to resonate below channel one.

The height of it is also a problem. If you are just hauling a box the height restriction is 13'6". I drove a car carrier for over 20 years and the limit on that is 14'. I always hit something with the antenna at that height.

Nah, I have the top of my Wison 2000 right at 13" 6", and don't have a problem, and I run 48 states. Also, a 102" whip is far more broadbanded than a coil antenna is. Just a note: car carriers are limited to 13' 6" east of the Mississippi River just like everyone else is, unless you run an overheight permit.

13'6"

I think it has to do with whether or not you are driving on a federally funded highway.

On the big rig, find a spot behind the sleeper that is grounded and about 5 feet above ground, like on a headache rack or muffler support. You may need to make a bracket to get near the right spot. Take a rubber tarp strap and remove the hooks. Use this to secure the whip about half way up, near the top most part of the cab or sleeper. Put the whip right through the hole in one end ot the strap and anchor the other end.

I have heard of drivers mounting the 102 right on the frame behind the cab with very good results but then the overall height is only around 11'.
