just picked up a hy-gain 2 and a cobra 85 at the local flea market for 20 bucks for the pair, both in good working order and the 85 even still has the fcc callsign sticker on it from the original owner...both radios bone stock...is ither of these worth messing with as far as mods go, or should i leave them alone, also is there any value in them as far as collectables go. |

I can't find if they are 23's or early 40's but either way they are ok radios but not worth putting much time or money in. DEPENDING if the hygain uses 3 crystals not 2 in it's PLL they can be converted to 10 meters. |

The FCC sticker from the original owner tells that the radio is real old to begin with, and as Bruce said not really worth putting any time or money in.
I'm guessing they are both 23 channel radios and possible collectors items only. |

yes they are 23 chan rids the 85 is all xtal while the hy-gain uses 3 xtals and a pll. i think i may keep them stock, i like old radios and i love a change of pace as far as radios operated goes...so, in closing, im moding them...lol...i cant help myself

The 3 xtal hygain can be put on 10 meters.
NEITHER is leagal for cb but if you like the old radios then you got your money worth ..... leagal or not!
I converted several of thoes hygains back when xtals were cheap but thats not the case today not at 20-30 bucks each. Yep some old radios are just nice to look at ...... like my HQ-140 just adds a bit of " The good old days " to this shack! |

I don't think that I would be concerned if they were "legal" or not. Use them, enjoy them. I would imagine that you stand a better chance of a pig falling out of a 747 at 30,000 feet onto your head while you are sitting on the toilet than the FCC worrying about your horrifically illegal 23 channel radio. |

As of Jan 1978 ALL 23's became illeagal but as a keepsake one is welcome to have all they want.
Most have at best iffy receivers and many crystal plexer controled transmiters which are very expensive to add channels too today.
In the late 70's and into the early 90's i converted many hygain cybernet chassies to 10 meters ...... crystals were 4 bucks in thoes days they are 25-40 today.
With todays export radios starting at just over 100 bucks 23's are not worth the trouble EVEN to convert for 10 meters. I put 48 of them in the garbage when we moved in 2000 and even the garbage pickers around here left them alone.
It's like the old HAM radios " VINTAGE " yea right most are old unstable tube rigs ( like SWANS and EICO's ) some are AM only and most would stand out like a sore thumb ... with a few exceptions like a KWM-2 or top end hallicrafters which ARE still fairly good even today.
I still have my he-15b and HE-20c both bought new in 1963 and both still work but are in sad need of new caps and a good cleaning except for the fact i USED THEM as a kid 40 years ago they have no value as a radio today. |

As I have a couple 23 channels radios work perfect.
Besides who is running 100% legal any way.

OK If anyone is interested in what I finally did for a Radio. I found an extremely clean Grant XL and retired the Texas Star 250 and just ordered a TS 500V this morning from Copper. Thanks again |
