I've seen a few radios out there with front firing speakers, mostly from Midland and Cobra.

When it comes to CBs with front firing speakers ONLY, any opinions on what sounds the best for receive and what sounds the best for transmit out of the box?

Thanks in advance and 73s,

One more thing - no mods or tweaks can be done to the radio - it MUST remain STOCK.

Texas Ranger TR696 FSSB base radio. Very good base radio in my opinion. http://www.copperelectronics.com/cgi-bin/checkitout/checkitout.cgi?catalogSTORE:CKIE:prodE00-07000+

Ack! I guess I left out a critical detail - it needs to be a mobile! :-)

Sure, if I buy an inverter I could run this mobile, but where would I sit? :-)

747,
the front fire speaker narrows it down quite a bit
#1 Uniden pro535w
#2 Cobra 18 WX ST
#3 Cobra 18 Ultra
as of this evening I have tried all 3 and ranked them in the order i would choose them, based on recieve and tx.all 3 have weatherband.the Uniden actually has the best sounding recieve.on air reports from my locals could not distinguish ANY difference between them.

I guess what I am really going for is a CB with that "commercial radio" look.. plus since my mobile ham radio has the front firing speaker, i'm wanting to stick with that..

But of course, I'd want to make the most of it - hence my wanting to know what sounds best stock.. No more tweaking for me..

747, I would stay clear of the Cobra 18WX ST. I have owned two of them and both developed the same problem. Receive audio failure. Both radios were sent to Cobra and repaired only to have the same thing happen about 6 months later. Sent back again and repaired. One was sold upon return from Cobra, I still have one, but it is only used as a back up radio or for in our van on trips. The wife likes the weather feature when traveling. My two cents worth.

Uniden pro535w out of the box would be the way to go in my opinion.I have used and listened to all of them(still have the Midland 77-120ESP)and the Uniden is the better radio out of the box.

Rob5mike,

Where would you rank the Midland compared to the others mentioned in this thread?

Thanks!

The Midland and Cobra's seemed to be about the same, the Uniden would out talk the others.
