I bought some pretty knobs for my S9. I tried to pull the knob off but they would not budge. So I called Magnum, I think I spoke to a fella named Joe, I'm not good at remembering some things.Anyway he said to use an Orange stick. He said it was madeof wood and flat on the ends like a screwdriver. He said to put the end under the knob and pry up going all the way around the knob till it comes off. He said to use wood so you don't damage the radio. He also said not to pull on the knobs because he said it was possible to pull the pot(potentiometer)out. That would not be a good thing and might cause you to shed a tear or two. So when I feel more like damaging my radio I will try then, it sure would look nice with these new knobs though.

An orange stick is used for manicures. Ask your wife about it or Mom or girlfriend.
OR use a stick from an ice cream bar. Or a small flathead screwdriver will work just fine, put a little black tape around the end of it. You won't hurt your radio.
Yes, you could pull the pot out, look inside the radio and see how the shaft is mounted into the casing, with something that looks like a clip holding it on. |

Wildrat,
Yes, I have and I personally will not do it again.
I have removed them from the S-3 / S-6 / S-9 to install the Old Glory face plate and WILL NOT DO IT AGAIN.
I even heated them with a hair dryer and that was no help at all.
The Manufacturing plant uses some great stuff when they install them and they should not fall off or come lose in maybe the next 500 years. 
THOSE KNOBS ARE REALLY ON THERE!!!!!!!!!!!!
I got tired of calling Sam and ordering new control pots.
And the Sticks? Yep tried about 20 of them and broke them all. 
The factory knobs are just Great with me.

What Lon is saying, go by Murphy's Law if the radio works the way it came from the factory, leave it alone and don't mess with it.

After listening to the fella on the phone, I told him the same thing about just leaving the factory knobs on, I told him I would put them on my Goldface 3900.It's old enough now to where I would not cry if it broke, not like I did a couple of months ago when I burnt the reverse polarity diode. Now I have the S9 so I can experiment on the 3900, or when the S9 comes way down in price,or in another 11-12 years when I burn a diode in the S9 and mope around the house till the wife says go ahead order your radio so I don't have to look at ya, ya crybaby.

Well, I haven't taken the knobs off my S-9 yet. So the 'glue' is a new one on me. Otherwise, removing knobs from a radio won't hurt it. And if done right, you won't mess up your faceplate.
Maybe ya just better leave well enough alone? |

I did not leave well enough alone. I got four knobs off and three new knobs back on. I am going to have to run a drill thru the restof the new knobs to remove the chrome plating on the holes. The knobs come off, they are just a bit stuborn getting them going.

What knobs did you end up with? Nitro knobs or jeweled knobs?

I got the jeweled knobs. My wife and I were out riding our bikes and we stopped at a chrome shop for big rigs and I saw them there. They have all kind of cool stuff at that store: fancy switches, lights. They had a CB shop too. The CB shop was renting space. I went in but was not impressed. Anyway see YA!

I got all the knobs off my S9. Most of the knobs went right on with no problem. The two part knobs took a little work. I have the jeweled knobs. First thing I had to do was remove the chrome plating from inside the knob. I did this with a drill bit ever so slightly bigger than the hole. After doing this the knobs would slide on to the knob shafts. This is when another problem arose. The small knob, or inner knob would not go on far enough on the shaft for the set screw in the knob to tighten down on the shaft. I took care of this by taking a 9/32 drill bit and drilling the hole on the back of the large outer knob bigger. I drilled the hole bigger down to about 1/16 above the set screw on the large outer knob. What this does is allow the outer knob to slide over the threads that retain the potentiometer/variable resistor to the case. This allows the inner knob to also slide farther down it's shaft. So now my S9 has pretty blue jeweled knobs.

An easy way to get the jeweled knob look without taking off your knobs is to go down to the local craft store and buy the jewels and glue them to the factory knobs. They look pretty good unless you dont like the shape of the factory knobs. But 2 bucks sure beats 40bucks when you have 4 kids. |

I don't think you wild find jewels at the craft store to fit the S9 knobs properly. Plus the jeweled knobs I got for the S9 are chromed aluminum with the jewel. Yes they were a little pricey but hey, if you want something bad enough you figure out a way to get it, either saving up, or by some other means. Hopefully it will be by saving up.
