AntennaWish

That is a pic of Tech291's antenna that I am hoping to duplicate.

This is from a post on it:
OK,
a quick rundown.
42' tower with thrust bearing on top to support the weight.
21'of 1-1/2"sched40 galvanised pipe for mast plus a reducer and 3' 1" galv so Maco V58 could go on top.
53'agl to the pl connector on the Maco
43'agl to the center of the boom for the beam.
CDE AR-22xl rotator
104'SWI rg-213 for the beam
140'Times LMR-240 for the Maco(excess coiled in attic)
Volt-Guard 8 line surge supressor for rotator
2 Altelicon lightning supressors for coax
3 9'copperclad groundrods buried horizontal(tablerock at 4')
still not done with it yet, been messing with it since june when time or weather allowed.

Now I have some questions.

• I take it the 21'of 1-1/2"sched40 galvanized pipe for mast was not a single piece but joined with couplers - Is this correct?
answersched40 is sold in 21' sections.the 1.5" actually measures 1.98" so it had to be reduced for the V-58 to be mounted on top hence the reducer and 30" section of 1" pipe.

• 53'agl to the pl connector on the Maco
43'agl to the center of the boom for the beam - What does agl mean? Sorry but I really do not know.
answereasy one,agl=above ground level

• CDE AR-22xl rotator - Guessing I need something similar to this to operate the beam. Tech291 you stated because of my location I would want a certain type (like South to North or something), could you review this again for me?
answerthe AR-22xl is the rotator for turning or aiming the beam, will go into detail in another post about the north-south thing.

• Now my tower is only 30' tall and right now I am running my Maco with a 10' Stinger(mast) to get it up to 40'. If I can not find another 10' section of tower can I mount the beams at 36 feet to feedpoint and the Maco at 44 feet to feed point and be OK. Will the thrust bearing handle this.
answerhaving over 10' of mast outside the tower,I suggest not using anything less than 1.5" sched40.the weight of the mast and antennas makes the thrust brg a necessity.I wanted at least 1/4 wavelengh between the antennas to reduce interaction, notice also in the pic the V-58 ground radials are not parrelel to the beam elements.

• Speaking of Thrust Bearings any recommendations? Can I use two, one at the top of the tower and another above the rotor.
answerYes,2 would also help to remove lateral loads from the rotator during high wind times.

I have ordered 213 coax hoping this will work.
answerYes.I only used the lmr240 because I already had it.It will be replaced in the future with a remote antenna switch.

• Stack with MBSK for extra 3db - got that from the Copper web-site, what does it mean?
answerMBSK means Maco-Antenna-Stacking-Kit.It is a boom in which you would use to stack or co-phase 2 similar beam antennas like the M-104(picture Bruces stacked 2meter beams)

• M00-05101 MACO M104C 4 ELEMENT BEAM ANT. - This antenna can be installed flat / horizontal correct or am I looking at the wrong antenna???
answeryes, that is the one you want.It can be orented horz or vertical.

• Presently I have a 34 ground wire from the Maco antenna all the way down to the ground rod - Do I still do this and the same for the beam or use the tower as the ground????
answerDefinate YES!Use the ground wire from the base of the V-5000 to the ground rod system!

Thanks for helping me out with these questions.

WOW - Missed the answers in blue but gotta say THANKS now that I see them.

Wondering if I would be better off putting an Imax 2000 up with the beam rather than the Maco V-5000. Might save some hassles and make things easier plus allow me to get the beams a bit higher in the air. If anything were to happen to the Maco on top of the beams it would be a major hassle to get to it (already learned this one the hard way as I had the coupler above the tower and then the 10' stinger to lift it to 40'. This last little go round with the lightening caused me to have to take it down - was a bit scary and got my heart racing for sure).

I could always have the Maco V-5000 mounted on the 30' push up pole ready to be lifted for a back up I guess. It would be about 30 feet away and at 10' when not being used. That antenna works GREAT so don't want it sitting in a shed some where.

The A-99 I have taken apart (three sections) and put in a tube on top of my camper. When I setup camp the A-99 goes up. No more little antenna on top of the camper, works fine for this purpose.

• So do you think I would be better off going with the Imax on top of the beams???

I am torn as the V-5000 seems like an awesome antenna but the Imax would be much easier. Have heard good things about the Imax 2000 but with the GPK. Wonder how well it will work without the GPK as it will be right above the beams.

• Will the beams work like a GPK for it???

• If so, as well as the one that is made for it???

I hate having to make decisions!

Thanks Again,
Tim

Imax 2000 works well without GPK and can
be mounted directly above beam.
I love metal antennas way more than fiberglass,
but, i'd have to agree the Imax 2000 would
be alot easier to deal with in your situation.

so with that said and you go with the Imax 2000 I'll know how to install mind after giving you a hand again knowing you like the extra help, i know I do.

i can picture the puzzled look on sinker's face now, when i remind him that wasn't it he who said he preferred the performance of the maco v5000 over the imax

sorry, tim, but i couldn't live with myself if i didn't remind ya

Oh and I do too. Well think the Maco V-5000 is great anyway. Never had an Imax so not sure. I would like to set mine up like Tech291 has his so I keep the Maco. But some times practical comes into play and the way we have been dodging Hurricanes the last two years and the forecast for it to continue it might be easier to go with the Imax.

Starface you know I will come help if you want.

you could always move up here with the rest of us on this island-wearing a target on our back & saying it's been 20 years since the last one with sustained winds over 100mph....

Not sure how it is on the Island but it was to cold in Upstate New York when I lived there - Warren County - City of Lake George.

the average snowfall since records kept in 1880's is less then 30" per year. since 1996, we've averaged almost 60" & temp average has been more then a few degrees BELOW the 100+ year average. i've been to lake george in jan/feb for winter festivals...i would SWEAR that when it's in the single digits on LI, it is COLDER then lake george at -10°-must be that nasty wind off the atlantic ocean

i must be getting old though, i can almost enjoy the SUMMER weather in bruce & wildrat's neighborhood-ALMOST

I like it here, will like it better when I can talk on the base and remind y'all how nice it is to be running the air in the middle of winter. Well I guess I better go, I gotta go shovel snow, ice, and slush. Oh that's right I'm in Florida.

I think i'll go out and bask in the sun.
Oh i forget, i'm in PA and there hasn't
been any for awhile. I love snow anyhow!
There's nothing like a ole fashion
White Christmas and watching kids make
snowmen and making angels in that cold fluffy
stuff. Watching your antenna radials load up with ice, but, not to worry soon a 40-50 mph wind will come and knock it off for ya. Hearing the clanking of your tower in the winds, almost like its playing your song as the guy wires vibrate in the wind. I love it! Hate the heating bills though...LOL

Could someone tell me how high should the IMax be above the beam when you are using a ear kit?

No need for the GPK(ear kit) if the beam is mounted flat under the imax just get it as close to the boom as you can, the beam will act as the GPK (ear kit)for the imax.

PS See my post above of the Imax and M104C beam.
Hope this helps
