I have a like new Uniden Grant LT. It's been peaked ever so little by a pro tech and has had the clarifier opened. This radio doesn't appear to drift on frequency at all.
I opened the case and saw that it has a MB8719 chip; the radio was made in the Phillipines.
I'd like to have some extra frequencies opened up and then use it with my Galaxy 225 as one of the radios I use for dx.
My question is, is this Grant LT considered a good quality radio? As good as the Grant XL? I've owned others with obviously more power, but few seem to be as stable on ssb and have as good receive.

EVERY BIT AS GOOD AS THE XL...exactly the same radio, except for the backlighting, squelch, & different board on mic jack. ALL mods are the same, including freq expansion. yes they both are very stable on SSB, unless you do the 21kc slide mod, then it moves a bit, unless you can find an OLD 10 turn pot. |

bert, check out the yah00 group called "the mod" for a very, very, very cool channel mod for this radio.

I signed up for that Yahoo group and read up on it. Man, am I lost. Are there really techs out there that can program an eprom? I mean run-of-the-mill cb shop techs? Most of the techs that I've run across most likely think that an eprom is a virtual online high-school dance. Get it? E-Prom...umm, never mind. Dumb joke.
Anyways, take a look at this parts list:
1) non plated "perf board" 33 full holes by 30 full holes (mod board)
1) non plated "perf board" cut to fit your particular radios display window (LED board)
14 full holes by 6 full holes for a 148.
1) roll of Kynar wire wrapping wire
1) long UDMA 33 40 pin hard drive cable (MOD to CB inter connects)
9) 14 pin low profile soldertail IC sockets
1) 16 pin low profile soldertail IC socket
3) 24 pin low profile soldertail IC sockets
3) 74HC00 quad 2 input positive NAND gate
1) 74HC08 quad 2 input positive AND gate
1) 74HC04 hex inverter
1) 74LS190 synchronous BCD UP/DOWN counter (must be "LS" series or straight 74190 for this chip)
4) 74LS06 hex inverter with open collector outputs
3) 27C32 32K EPROM's (programming required)
1) 7805 5 Volt regulator IC with insulating hardware (mounted to existing chassis hole)
1) SPST tactile pushbutton switch
1) 2N2222 NPN general purpose transistor
2) 5 Volt PCB mount SPDT relays
2) 1N4003 diodes (relay spike supression)
11) 10K Ohm 1/4 watt 5% resistors
1) 47K Ohm 1/4 watt 5% resistor
* 17) 680 Ohm 1/4 watt 5% resistors (for FND-360HR displays in my 148)
1) 0.1uF 35 Volt tantalum capacitor
1) 0.1uF 50 Volt mylar capacitor
1) 10uF 25 Volt electrolytic capacitor
3) Common ANODE 7 segment LED displays (size, seg style , color , your choice)
1) 11.1125 Mhz crystal

i didnt say it was easy!
if you wait a while, the moderator (ironic eh?)
of the group is having PC boards made up which should simplify things greatly.
i have personally built one, and am almost ready to install it in my 2000gtl.
it is a pain in the butt, but is is not "technically difficult".
there is great support from the group members, and they moderator will program your EPROMS (funny!)
for free.
i love building kits, and this one has been fun so far, just very time consuming!
if you just want to have a radio with the mod in it.
check *bay, Randy from the group has built 5 mods and has put two that i know of up for auction.
he has plans for another, and it will be one SWEET radio.
picture this: a mint condition Phillipines 148GTL
with the MOD, a 10 turn clarifier that swings about +7khz in either direction (thats all you need with the mod), a channel guard, and an alignment.
i want one!

That bad boy radio from Randy would go for $250 to $300 easy! Maybe more. Could be the new "thing", eh?
Also, I hope you let us all know when you have yours finished. We want to hear about it for sure. |
