Hi,
I recently purchased a Cobra 200GTL-DX from the USA, I am located in London England.
I have noticed that the SSB Transmitted audio sounds 'Crunchy and pops' but ONLY on High Power.
When I received the radio 'fingers' had already been inside as power output was 90watts FM!!
I turned the power down to Cobra's spec of 32 Watts but this prob still occurs.
The mod released by Cobra Service bulletin #10043 has been performed, a 1uF 63v electrolytic cap has been fitted across C607 to ground.
But the Audio problem still occurs.
I am using a 50 Ohm Dummy load and original mic, PSU is rated at 13.8v 60amps.
Same problem exists on Astatic 575M6 and Ham Master 4200 base mic, any help would really be gratefully received, otherwise I will have no choice but to return the radio under warrantee as Faulty, something I don't want to do, I really like the Radio otherwise.

try running radio on low i heard of alot people having this problem my cb tech says just run it on low not high might help |

is it an 'original', or a newer model with 2290's? the originals seemed to have a problem when clipping the limiter & cranking 'em that fits the description of your trouble. some other part has a tendency to go south after clipping. can't locate where i saw that, though, because it noted specific parts. not sure about the newer version, though.
as dale states, the ones that get cranked WELL above the rated output tend to sound bad, also i've seen using a BIGGER power supply help out-even drawing less then 20 amps, i've seen several show improvements when going from 20 & even 30 amp supplies, up to 50 ampers. |
