ok guys, here's a question, I think I know the answer but wanted some opinions, I have a wilson 1000 mag mount in the center of the roof('05 colorado ext'd cab), but was wondering if there would be any advantages to going to a 102" ss whip on the bumper, dont want to put holes in the body just yet.

I'd keep the 1000, or maybe go to a 5000 if your going to go with more power. I think it'll be better on the rooftop than on the bumper because you won't be as directional.

I would think that as good as a 102" whip is, the Wilson dead center of your roof would probably do better. Reason to my "theory" is the roof top gives it the best ground plane and omnidirectional capabilities. 102" on the bumper just won't be able to compete speaking generically. It may be stronger in one direction, but mounted there, I doubt you would gain much height advantage, and reflect from tailgates may affect it.

Be that said, each antenna/vehicle setup has differing consequences so I cannot state my theory as fact, morelike my best educated guess based on antenna location (and that it's a Wilson 1000). A lesser antenna would have changed my answer to chosing the whip.

Dale,

that setup you mentioned works fantastic if all is grounded well. If I did not run with a shell on the back of my Silverado, I would probably be running that setup with a 102" whip. Being my shell is fiberglass, I'm currently running a Predator 10K on the roof.

I've got a varied background including Flight Deck Coordinator when I was in Prowlers, to the Production Control LCPO when I was ships company. Currently in the EP-3E community. It's been quite the learning experience, but the priority is awesome. Rolling to Pensacola in May to do something different. I refuse to ever be set in my ways, so I keep things changing.

so how's the P-3's treating you, I would love to go to that platform but the detailer says nuh-uh, no way, you have an NEC, but anyway, so far after I put a couple of loops in my power cable of the KL-300P, everything seems to be working good, now if I could just get some good dx conditions to work with...LOL. take care Alsworld

If you have a Wilson 1000 mag mount make sure you remove the water that builds up under it because otherwise your roof will start to RUST, THIS IS NOT A JOKE. I have a 2005 Monte Carlo with a rust spot the size of the magnet on my roof. NOT GOOD.

Sir_monte,

Remove Magnet from holder, Clean magnet.

You can paint magnet or cover magnet with clear plastic sandwich bag.

Problem solved.
