Clipped limiter or NPC mod is my guess.

Which mic are you using Freebird? TRY to get me on 27.225 any night during the week after supper till about 10pm. I talk to quite a few of CT locals from the island every night. Be glad to hit you with a radio check. Had you on the net Sunday and I can't tell if it was Short skip conditions or what but you certainly made the trip.
Anyway...my point was I noticed those Turner desk mics sound muffled TO ME on a clipped rig.

Hank
...hope to hear you soon~:-) BTW...I'm "905" over there...shout me. :-)

was the mod he referred to called the "2SC2999 mod"?

if so, it has no effect on the audio quality of the radio.

check to see if these parts are cut or missing.
R131
TR26 (right behind R131)
TR24
these parts are near the front right looking at the component side of the PC board, knobs facing you.

now look near VR11.
is there a resistor clipped near here?
is VR 11 turned all the way to one side?

now check VR 10. its hidden on the right hand side of the audio transformer (the smaller one, on the PC board)
is it turned all the way one way?
what is your dead key wattage?

if any of these parts are gone or clipped. replace them and turn VR 10 and 11 to mid way.
now how do you sound?
matt

D52 and R44 are cut to unlock the clarifier.
R131 is near the right side looking at the component side of the board.
right in front of TR26.
right near L1 and L2.
for the dead key; check VR10, its to the right of the transformer, hidden under some wires.
its probably turned all the way one direction.
watch the dead key as you turn it and dont go past about 3 or 4 watts.
