'Looking at buying a pristine President AR144. I wondered if anyone knows anything about this radio?
Easy to modify?
It will be used for ragchewing on ssb only. Is it comparable to say a President Grant?
Thanks :}

If you've been a CBer for a while then I'm sure you've heard how great the receiver is in the Cobra 146. This is basically the same great little radio. Other similar radios are the President P300, President AX-144, and Realistic TRC-451.

I own a President AX-144 which is nearly the exact same radio. I like that the mode switch lights up a different color LED for each mode - nice touch.

It's not quite the radio that a Uniden Grant is, but it's still very good. A Channel Guard REALLY helps these radios with adjacent channel rejection. Without it they are pretty bad compared to a Uniden Grant.

They are modifiable, but not nearly as easy as the Uniden Grant.

Thanks for the reply Hollowpoint.
Ya, I have a friend who runs a 146 in his car and he says it's extemely quiet and sensitive to weak signals. I also own one, but seldom use it.
That's good advice because I also have the opportunity to pick up an excellent Uniden Grant. 'Can't get both :-(, so maybe I'll stick with the Grant.
Sounds like you prefer the Grant....

Bert: Which Uniden Grant? There has been over the past 30 plus years, several different models of the Uniden Grant, the Grant XL/LT were the cream of the whole crop.
If the Grant you have in mind is an XL or LT, then I would say that's your best choice.
I own a pristine Grant XL that is my base radio and my every day sideband talker.

I would choose the Grant over the AR-144 as long as it worked okay because I think they're the best performing CB recently made. The only reason I'd choose the AR-144 would be size - it's slightly narrower than the Grant. The AR-144 is still a very good radio though.

Hi Yankee, thanks! Yep, it's a Grant XL that I have my sights on. 'Already own a nice Grant LT; only mod is an open clarifier.....
