Anyone know where I can find an element for my beloved D104? I know they do not make them any longer, but I'm hopeing someone has a line on some or a secret stash.

If not....is there a good subsitute that is out there....and has anyone tried it?

I have seen a substitute on the auction sites but can not say anything about them as I do not know if they are any good - Never Used Them.

Seems I need three elements myself (Silver Eagle, Knight Eagle & Knight K Eagle). I have a new element in a Diamond Edition but will not take it out of it.

So I too am curious.

Heil has a D-104 conversion kit that you can get. They work good, did one on one of my D-104's.

Gage: almost don't want to ask what the Heil conversion element kit cost, and is the audio as good as the old trusty D-104, I have 2 working D-104 heads and a 10-DA head between a Silver Eagle and 3 TUG-8 stands.

I have a D-104 head with the old cartridge in it and I compared the converted one to the old one big difference. The converted one is crisp and clear, smooth sound while the original is not as clear or as smooth sounding. The 10DA head sounds better but a little muffled sound to it.

It's $59 - OUCH! It probably won't sound the same as a D104 element because it's dynamic instead of crystal. Both the Heil elements have a rising voice characteristic like the D104, but from listening to the examples they have online, I'd say the HC-4 is closer to the response of the D104.

Personally I'd just look for an inexpensive ceramic element to replace a defective element in a D104. It'll have a similar response and cost about $57 less than the Heil conversion.

the so called replacement elements found on the auction site are available for about $3 each from
the big electronics place that rhymes with "houser".

i cant find it right now, but there is a guy doing a custom conversion to these mics for about $100.00.
(its not the heil conversion)
he has audio examples of the difference, and if he can be believed; the results are outstanding.

I have seen that website to convert the audio on your D-104 mics.I'm very happy with the sound from the conversion I did.I also did not want to have the same audio sound, if you hear the difference I beleive its well worth the money!

If I wanted to find a substitute I'd buy various ceramic elements, try each one to see what they sound like, and still pay less than Heil's conversion. Not that the Heil conversion is poor in any way, but it's awfully expensive.

$100 to modify a $100 microphone - I don't think so. Homey don't play that game.

When mine went bad years ago, I ordered the element but in the mean time I found a mic element from a pair of old Aircraft headsets and used it. Most people could not tell the difference. I still have the element in case of an emergency. I don't use the D-104 so it should last the rest of my life.

Here's a past topic that discusses D104 modifications and the impedance mismatch problem between the element and the amplifier:
