I was reading something that appeared that para dynamics put out and it said this filter could handle 1kw rms and 5kw pep. It does not. I had one burn up today behind my box. I am keying about 75w and swinging 1.4kw. Luckily it does not appear that my box was harmed. I guess I will go to the electronics store tomorrow and see if I can get some better components for the thing, or just run one behind the radio, and look for a better quality TVI filter.

There's nothing like the smell of burning electronics.

i use a drake filter, you can find them at the auction site.
nye viking is also a good one.
a good rule of thumb is to buy one that is advertised in ham catalogs.

The PDC 1089 would handle 1000 watts Peak for a very short duty rating. The RMS rating is closer to 250 watts and for the 1000 watt peak look at about 25% duty cycle. (25% on vs. 75% off times).

The capacitors used in the network could not handle 1000 watts for long. The 1000 watts was acceptable for SSB but for AM the power rating was really much lower.

PDC (we) made a PDC 1090 which was made by Vectronics and it could handle 1500 watts PEP and was a much better Chebyshev 9 pole filter.

Hey Wildrat! I use a Nye Viking low pas filter connected to the back of my radio with a right angle adapter and coupler. So its actually a piece of the radio housing now. Then I use a short as possible jumper to the amp. From what I have learned is that the radio produces the harmonics not the amp. Filter out the harmonics before they get amplified and you get better results...honest. Its how I do it and it works for me. My amp also runs cooler and more effiecent now! I get cleaner and LOUDER audio reports too! Also with 1.4 kw no wonder the nieghbors complain!

Hotwire I was trying to put a filter on both. Yes, someone is putting out bad info on that TVI filter in Para Dynamics name. I wish I could remember the site. They said it could do 1000 RMS and 5000 peak. I guess that site does not care about it's customers. I got mine at Copper. I went to the Parts store this AM. The biggest cap they had was 3kv. Maybe RF ***** has them. I will look at the other filters also.

Thanks
Mark

I just use my RCI 2995dx base while
shooting DX and when the conitions are
right i have no problems making contacts
with a dead-key of 50 watts (AM) swinging
150 watts. 150 watt PEP SSB.
Have no problems with neighbor interference.
So, thats where i stop since things are working
out in all ways.
I do have a LM-TVX2 low pass filter hooked
directly into my radio. (I got your message Wildrat that Copper no longer offers this filter.)
Conditions haven't been that great here in
PA this week so far. 90% Spanish DX coming in.

I used a male/male connector and a 90 degree connector and hooked it directly to the radio. Tech808/Lon has some pictures on here somewhere. I can't remember where.

I'm only using my radio and no amp.
Get a male/male connector screw one end into
the TVI filter and the other into the radio.
Plug your coax into the other side of the
TVI filter.
If using a separate amp i think the filter should be after the amp.

I've heard that some people use Ferrite
Cores snapped on to each jumper they use.
Several in series. Whether this helps or
not i don't know. Maybe something to
experiment with.

The jumper I use from my filter to amp is as short as possible. About 1 foot long.
