I really like the connex 4800 dlx and im thinking of buying one from copper but i notice there isnt any 10khz switch on it for those channels. Is there a way to put one in?I like the magnum s 9 also and it has the switch but i like that fact that the 4800 goes lower in frequency.I like the galaxy 99v also but I notice they drift on sideband to bad they don't fix this..what radio would you buy the Magnum s 9,Galaxy 99 oR the connex 4800 dlx????? If i was a rich man id buy all three..lol

(808 if you move my post could you post the link to where its been moved to thanks 73's)

The 4800 does have a 10 kHz switch. I have a 4800 & S9, they are both good radios. The connex does go lower in frequency, but most people will never need to go that low. The S9 has a better receiver and is much quieter than the connex, it has variable talk back & power, the connex only has on/off talk back and a hi/low power switch. Both clarifiers on the S9 are unlocked, the corse on the connex is unlocked and the fine is locked. I personally like the clarifiers on the connex.

I would go with the S9.
If you want a good SSB radio, don't buy a Galaxy!

I'd go with the S9, but you need to make a decision, S9 with 2SC1969 finals or wait and get the S9 with the ERF-2030 finals. If you buy one now it will have the discontinued 2SC1969's. People say there are still a lot of 69's left and there is nothing to worry about. That's fine, it isn't their radio. If my radio breaks I want it repaired back to spec. I don't want a conversion kit put in it. The power output of my S9 is fine for my use, so I don't need the extra power. It drives my box just fine. I went ahead and bought a few pairs of 69's myself. I am sure others have done the same. If you are going to drive a box like mine you don't need a S9 that will do 80 watts. My S9 is turned down, the glorious Top Gun modulator turned off, it DK's about .75w and swings just over 20w this makes the box dk about 80w and swing 1.4kw. So you see the S9 has plenty of power plus all the toys. I'd get an S9 again!

thanks for the info guys.i like the fact that both clarifiers are unlocked on the S9 i didnt know that makes it easyer to get it on frequency that way.the connex 4800 dlx has talk back?i didnt think it did.im pretty much sold on the S9 for the simple reason both clarifiers are unlocked i use sideband alot so i like that..later

Wait a few months and I would get the 175 watt version S-9.

I have 2 Galaxy DX99V radios and will be selling both along with the Galaxy Saturn Turbo I have.
I think Pat has invaded my brain or something......

I have no experience with the Connex so can't say.

The Connex is basically the old 148F GTL DX. It covers 10,11, and 12 meters. 12 bands VS 8 with the S-9. The Connex is tried and true and has been around for YEARS. You can unlock the fine clarifier in the 4800 if that is an issue

Freebird, the S9 will go from 25.615 - 29.215 after conversion, it will go above 30 MHz if you choose to reprogram it. Are you looking at the new connex with echo or the old version? The echo version comes with talkback and a 10 kHz switch, I know the old one did not come with talkback & I'm not sure about the 10 kHz switch.

both hatchet & moonraker are correct on the S9 & connex differences. the S9 has 11+ bands AVAILABLE to it, you have to program it internally, it will go much higher then the connex, but the connex will cover 12 meters(high 24 mHz).

and, moonraker said it 1st, i'm only agreeing with him here, go with the S9 & forget about the galaxy , & like sinker said, within the next 3 months or so, you'll have 3 S9's to choose from, the 45 watter, the 80 watter & the 175 watter...YAAAAHOOOOOO!!!

As much as I stand behind connex I have to admit that RF Limited has got your back if the S-9 has trouble and they are being built with the mosfet finals now. Connex or Magnum either one is a good choice and you won't be disappointed! I love my 4800! Come to my town and I'll give ya a run for the money!

I have to agree with Hotwire about RF Limited being behind you. I bought a used S9 "about a year old" and had a couple of minor problems. I called Sam Lewis from RF Limited and he was very helpful.
Fellows this guy is very friendly and eager to help.
It is so nice to have someone like this behind you and his products

the connex comes with the coarse ONLY unlocked. though i would have preferred it didn't, the S9 comes from the factory with BOTH unlocked.

that is NOT enough to make me disown it, though

What could be scary in New York, Pat? Hmmm. How 'bout a freaking radio nut that roams about the cityscape seeking unsuspecting targets for his Grant XL/Sweet 16 combo? Hmmm? That DEFINES scary! I'll take the corn fields

Sounds like fun to me, ride around nyc with a great big box, keying down, stop a few pace makers, mess up some illegal laptop going on's. Sounds great, less snow birds down here corrupting Florida with their Porn shops and other things. I would definitely get the S9. I had a guy willing to give me 420 today for mine. I told him he could get one from copper for 319. Some shop around here was going to sell him a 40 watt S9 for the 420.
Pretty good mark ups on this stuff.

I no long transmit from the cornfields. Straight out of the soybean fields now. he he he

I'm confused more so than usual. Both clarifiers unlocked? The course adjusts my transmit freq when I talk, its unlocked. So if I unlock the fine it will adjust trasmit also? Amazing but is it really that necassary? Guess its personal preference. I can get dead center with ease with the course alone. I just like to keep thimgs simple.
Patzerozero! I will stay here in the boonies where its safe. We know better than to go to New York. Crazy cab drivers and whats up with the gators in the sewers I hear about? Wierd man....wierd.

Freebird,

You can find the Frequency Conversion listed in the Magnum S-9 Review.

Subscriber (Preview)
» Product Reviews
» Magnum S-9
» Review

When you place your order you can ask or check the box for the Options:Expand, align and tune: add 30.00 and tell them what coverage you want.

Or you can read the Review and do the Frequency Conversion yourself.

Hope this helps,

Lon

freebird, you can make the S9 cover 8 bands of channels between 25.165 & 30.555 or continuous from 26-32.990, depending how you mod, & if you change the band programming.

i am not thrilled that the fine is open, but hey...

Im4jc, i do not cruise with my dx1600 in my truck, that baby amp is sitting on the shelf at home. my XL in the mobile is mated to a lil ole davemade . ask CEF662, cruising the mean streets of NYC is an exercise in futility with all the looneys bleeding over everywhere! i usually sit on the beach, take in the sights & direct rf at unsuspecting seagulls....

never seen any gators in the sewers or when i worked 10 stories underground in the FW woolworth building(remember the movie 'the bone collector'). what i did see though....

ok so copper will does the mod to make it cover 25.165 & 30.555?thats what I want done to it but will it skip any frequencies with that mod?is there any adventage from this frequencie mod to the other one?pat what do you mean by it will go from 26-32.990 continuous? It seems to me that since both the fine and corse and both unlocked it would be easier to get it on frequency for sideband dont you think?

I have one last question.maybe someone who has the connex 4800 can answer this.Id the Connex 4800 missing any channels above or below ch 40?I know the galaxys are missing some but I was told that if you use your 10KHZ SWITCH you will get them all.Is the Connex 4800 dxl the same or no?thanks

i would assume that would be true.and just too clear something up the galaxys do have all the freq. below/above providing that it has a 10khz
switch not all do.but the older ssb galaxys mobiles do have that.i dont know about the 93t,or 95t i think they do also.but if your planning on using it mainly for ssb you wont be happy with a galaxy imoh

CB tricks says the S9 can cover the entire freqency range from 26.000 to 32.990 in 10 KHZ or 5 KHZ steps.

Can someone please explain this for me?

Thanks,

It can do it, but you have to program it to do so. It's not as easy as the straight conversion to 11 meter by placing a jumper cap across JP4.

Freebird,

From the factory the Connex 4800 DXL will cover EVERYTHING between 24.260 and 29.660, nothing is missing. YES you do need to use the 10kc switch to get into the area of the r\c channels. R\C channels are between ch. 3 and 4, betwween ch. 7 and 8, betwween ch.11 and 12, betwwen ch. 19 and 20. This is on all of the 12 band segments. The freq counter will diplay EVERYTHING. Nothing to worry about. You would love this radio. I wish you could hear mine! SSB is truely amazing and clear. At room temp my 4800 has never drifted. If its cold outside and you begin to warm it up it takes maybe 15 minutes to get stable. As stated in the ad it has excellent temperature compensation. Get one my friend!!!!

27.015
27.020

27.000
27.010
27.020 < This is 10kc steps.
27.030
27.030

Now if I'm wrong somebody school me please.
