I am looking for a new SSB CB in the very near future. How does the Galaxy 959 compare to the Cobra 148GTL or Uniden Grant on performance(RX)?
I like the larger "S" meter on the Galaxy.
How well does this unit hold up to mobile use? If you have any other suggestions I am open. I would be looking for 11 meter SSB capability, and the price under $180

Geekster,If you can find a Grant go for it. I have 3 148's and 1 959. The Cobra 148 is FAR better for SSB than the Galaxy 959 in performance. Better recieve and lower noise. The 959 has terrible adjacent channel rejection! The 148 is pretty good. Look inside a 148 and then look inside a 959. Even though the 148 has been gettin a bad rap lately others and myself believe in them. Get a 148 and have it alighned. The 959 is not bad for AM but SSB gets an F in my grade book! |

I have a base version of the 959, same board. I don't care for it's SSB performance either. It drifts around, sounds bad, etc. I'd go for a Magnum product if I were you. You can lock a 257 down to straight 40 and it's SSB performance is STELLAR!!! I get glowing comments on mine regarding audio, very clear. The comments come from old timers running converted ham rigs. The Magnum 257 sells ITSELF on the air! If you are looking for type accepted radios then i don't know what to tell you. Does Anyone make a type accepted radio doing SSB that is any good?

Thanks for the replies. Since the SSB reports are not that good I am looking into a Cobra 148 or something similar. I have been eye-balling a 2950DX

Geekster,
If you can wait a just little longer I would highly recommend the MAGNUM 257.
While it is a 10 meter radio not a CB it will still fall within your price range and offer you many more features and power than the standard AM/SSB CB.
Sam says they should be here in February.

I agree with Lon there geekster, if you can hold out a little while get the 257, I have one in my truck and everyone I talk to on it says it sounds great, although I did add a superstar DM-452 power mic, not that the radio needs it, but it is a nice "little" radio, you will not be sorry.

'Does Anyone make a type accepted radio doing SSB that is any good?'-i agree with hotwire that the new 148's get a bad rap. i did 1 quite a while ago that has been in an 18 wheel dump truck & has yet to miss a beat.
while the general sherman is hard to find, other then on e*auction, & it's xmit is arguably NOT QUITE the same as the XL, & prior to a 2999 mod, its rcv MAY have just a hair more hash then what it's been cloned from, it IS as close as is going to be gotten from a legal SSB CB. by ear, i find it to be tighter then the 949/959/2547.
i find myself using the radio more then my test equipment does, so why should i care what it sounds like to the test equipment  .
