i just got her.
and this 2000 screams on am "pep @ 35"but sounds like it's clipping on ssb "pep of 40".
even turning down to stock doesn't help.
on side band it's not loud and sounds like she's clipping but not on the top end.
just at the bottom.
so when you say cq cq it sounds like eq eq.

ok, unless someone has done the ERF2030 mod, or added a second final, or installed an internal amp; that radio is not swinging to 35 or 40 watts.
someone is telling you a fib, or you are placing to much faith in the accuracy of a CB wattmeter.
you might see 25 watts PEP on AM, but even that is rare.

as for the problem you are having; is sounds to me like someone has done a swing mod the radio and has the deadkey turned down too low.
are there any "boards" installed in the radio?

look on the solder side of the PC board (green side) look near the TA7222AP IC (on your left near the back of the radio if the front is facing you)
is there a 10uf electrolytic cap soldered onto one of the pins and the other side soldered close by?

check VR10 (near TA7222AP) is it there? is it turned all the way one way? put it at midway and try the deadkey, if its more than three watts, turn it down to three watts. this will give you a nice swing.
check these first, and if they dont help, i night have more suggestions.
matt

as far as i know, the only mod available for the ERF2030's is for the new model 148gtl's.
they are basically the same radio on the inside, but you may be experiencing some of the "bugs" that have not yet been worked out for installation into a 2000gtl.
i still need to know the answers to the above questions to help you.

Automatic Level Control

Hint on how a rat knows this:

Google> type "CB ALC pot", and take your pick of which link, I did not use the quotes, if you do it will look for those words only in that order.

I thought it stood for Automatic Limit Control so I Googled first before giving you bad info.

I forgot about that, forgive me, I even have a copy of it for reference, I am just used to using Google because I know out of the millions of computers out there someone will know something about anything I could even dream up, even a RatMade compressed, equalised, reverbirized, Turbo Echo, Roger beep, recording/playback, Super Duper trouble making, foot control, hand control, finger control, locking power Mic..
