I don't know what happened to my S9. I turned the power supply on, turned around to get the mic, then I heard a loud pop and turned around to see smoke pouring out of the S9. I will call Copper tomorrow and see what I need to do to get it fixed. I'm glad I sent the warranty in. I sure would like to open it up and see what blew. I just don't know what would go bang with power off. Anyone have an idea? The smell is bad too, it's not your regular burnt electronics smell. This smell has a ammonia smell to it. Oh Well, I guess I'll go cry in my coffee.

Well, I called Sam Lewis and it sounds to me like they are trying to get out of repairing the radio already. He was talking about my power supply being bad and putting out the wrong voltage, even though it was powering a small amp for my other radio at the time. I also ck'd the volts on the power supply which were fine. Then he started talking about I hooked the power cord up backwards, the radio has not been disconnected. Then he started talking about we have a protection circuit in the radio for reverse current and we'll know what you did. I do not think I like where this is going, and I hope it does not. I have been using this radio in the same configuration since I got on air with no problems till yesterday, and now it sounds like they will try to get out of fixing the radio. I know how to put a plug in a radio, and this one was never unplugged.

Maybe he was helping you trouble shoot and it was taken the wrong way? The reverse polarity diode is a telltale sign but you should have nothing to worry about if it's been sitting OK. Maybe a regulator failed, things do break and RF limited has been good about customer service. Just see what they have to say.

chad is correct, 'rat. i've dealt with rf limited since the middle '80's with a couple different ar3500's, my delta force on more then 1 occasion, as well as questions about my S9, and other assorted questions. 'trouble shooting' type questions were always asked before i sent any radio to them, or 1 of their authorized service centers in washington, california or pennsylvania. any problems that were found to be due to workmanship or design of the radio were taken care of for a minimal fee, or less. those troubles that turned out to be from normal wear & tear, as well as general 'hard use' were repaired at what i would say were more then fair costs, probably considerably less then what i would've paid had i taken it to a 'local hack shop'-had the shop even had the ability to work on the 3500 or delta.

i, as have most others, have found sam's customer service to be 2nd to none. bear with him.

I think you all are correct, Probably stress from my S9 dying, talking to Sam before he had the doors open there, And his questioning me about the plug and power supply got me crossed. I have since been communicating with Sam via E-Mail and things appear normal now. I just want my baby back, fixed of course. Pat you are correct they were troubleshooting questions, I forgot that he deals with all kinds of people besides me, so after remembering that, I calmed down a bit. I just did not like what I was hearing and the sounds of it. I did nothing except turn the P/S on, turn around to get a mic, and poof. Well I will wait and see what happens next. I am glad he wrote back, puts me at ease a little.

No way to know what happened until Sam takes a look inside. I would not worry too much Wildrat. Your baby will be as good as new soon!

I hope so, and soon, this Cobra 2010 is a nice radio, but my S9 is a great radio. Everyone keeps asking me if I'm OK, I say yes, and they say you don't OK. That S9 is a kick butt radio, and it drives Dave crazy, makes his blood pressure go way up.

Well no word on my dead radio yet. I have added a digital panel mount voltmeters to my power supplies so I can glance at them every now and then so no question will arise about them again, but what good will it really do but give me peace of mind, which I guess is something.

Sam Lewis just called me and my baby is on it's way home. If you want to see what Sam told me go to ham gear, and read the topic best ham, and read about the Icom radio with the 16 volt cap with power on it all the time and then drop down and read what Sam told me. Same type of problem.

Got the S9 back and it's working like it always did. **** ** did have one note on the repair ticket that they adjusted the output back to OEM. I guess I should have kept that 30 bucks for the tune up at Copper if when it's sent in for warranty work things get adjusted. The radio is working fine and everyone can tell the S9 is back home where it needs to be.
