I see alot brag about AM PEP. ( It swings 1,000,000 watts!!!) Is this derived from a tone generator, a steady "Ahhhhh" in to the mic, or just a loud shrill whistle? My guess is, one would have to speak porpoise to get those really high readings... |

Most people like to use "a loud shrill whistle", probably because it shows them higher wattage than they will ever achieve while speaking in a normal voice.
AM is supposed to be measured with an RMS meter. I'm not sure how much pep watts help on AM or if it has any effect at all. |

Well, I see all the ads involving equipment, especially amps, displaying output. I remember back in the day, a Boomer, DSS, Varmint, or what ever, put out what ever the model # was in AM with 3-4 watts input. Now it's in SSB, I assume, to appear to be a lot of fire for the wire. Now,(Elite 300, a 2 transistor for ex.), no way for DSS. All a marketing ploy? What's next. 115.6 liter amps with 99.99 pure quibs? Ehhhh. |

take the #'s off the meter, & just watch where it swings. if it swings to somewhere else, something has gone awry & needs further investigation. kinda like the 'relative-reading' meter on texas stars. if i can't get out, i use an amp with more transistors |

I agree with you Pat about the realative meter on the Texas Stars. Mine has never been close to correct or what I think it should read according to my watt meter. It just lets me know the amp is working. |
