I have recently purchased a Yaesu FT-101Z transciever, it doesn't have digital display for the frequency. This is the old anolog style. I am presently looking to purchase a freq. counter for it. I have located several and will purchase one soon.
Now to my Question, is has 160-10 meters in it now. I have a crystal coming to give me 27.5 thru 28.0. when I install this crysal I just tune it as instructed in the mannal for 10 meters. Is the any other adjustment to be made to make this work well on 11 meters. I have owned several FT-101 series beforE but never the Z or ZD model. I have tried the radio out and it works awesome. It seems to do about 30-65 watts on SSB on the 10mtr area of the band. I am sure after I have it a while I'll be able to load and tune it better. But getting that out of it, for me is sufficiant for a driver fOr the rest of my equipment. Presently,I am running a COBRA 2000 w/extras and monitor 27.5750 and old Blackcat Modulator JB-200B and it does and exellent job. Not to take anything away from the Cobra lovers, but the recive compared to the Yaesu FT 101 series is lacking. Just my personal experince , not looking to start a war of oppinions here. Anyone looking to make contact with me now to help me see the differnce in these two transcievers may contatct me on above mentioned frequency, most mornings ands late evenings after the 11 o'clock news. My call is #5 in the Ohio Valley. My 1st personal is Walter so feel free to contact me.(if you have the ability to make the trip) I aways use LSB on this freq. There is a small group of us that hang on this freq. One of my sister stations is 202 (PHIL) in Canton, Ohio. I have been in radio for 30 yrs now and enjoy it almost as much as my Harley Ultra Classic(not quite) I ride all summer thats why you'll never hear me when the weather is good enough to ride. I have put over 10k miles on it this summer and it too is equiped with a CB. But i can assure you it is not used as much as i'd like too, no side band...LOL... Well Happy Holidays to all. Thanks and looking forward to hearing anyone who can make the trip. ONE NOTE OF INTREST ALL MOBILES ARE ANSWERED FIRST ON THIS FREQ. SO IF THERES A LOT OF CALLS JUST HANG IN THERE...THANKS, .....OHIOBIKER

As I recall the FT-101Z had 6146B finals as opposed to the 6JS6 finals of the FT101E/EE/EX series. You should be getting a little more than 30-65 watts out on 10m though. Ohiobiker, are you in the Canton, OH area also? I am near Dayton, Ohio which is probably too far away to talk to you on 575.

Phil

PHIL,
I AM IN CARROLL COUNTY, THATS ABOUT 35 MILES SOUTH OF CANTON OHIO, 20 MILES NORTH OF STUBENVILLE AND ABOUT 1HOUR&15 MINUTES WEST OF COLUMBUS. I HAVE TALKED TO DAYTON AND CINCI AREA A FEW TIME BEFORE. I AM ON IN THE MORNING AND BETWEEN 11PM AND 1 AM IN THE EVENING HOURS. I ALSO JUMP IN AND OUT IN THE AFTERNOON NO SET TIMES THERE. THE FT101-Z IS DOING MORE THAN 65 WATTS AFTER PERFECTING THE TUNE UP PROCEDURE AGAIN IT IS DOING JUST OVER 100 WATTS ON TEN METERS. BUT I CAN SEEM TO GET IT TO RECEIVE ON 11 METERS. ACCORDING TO THE OPERATORS MANUAL IT STATES ALL THE CRYSTALS ARE IN IT FROM THE FACTORY. I HAVE LOOKED INSIDE AND IF I AM LOOKING AT THE RIGHT THING, THEY ARE THERE. IT HAS ALL THE SLOTS FILLED ON THE PREMIX LOCAL(PB-1965)UNIT. WHICH IS LOCATED JUST INSIDE THE TOP COVER ON THE RIGHT HAND SIDE OF THE UNIT. IT SEEMS TO LOAD AND DO FINE ON THE BAND SWITCH OF 10B, 10C, 10D,...BUT THERE IS NOT RECEIVE. WAS THERE SOMETHING THAT NEEDED TO BE DONE FOR THIS TO RECEIVE ON THOSE BAND SWITCH AREA? I PURCHASED THIS FROM A HAM AND HE WAS NOT TOO PLEASED WHEN HE DISCVER'D THAT I WASN'T A HAM. BUT ALL IN ALL I AM PLEASED WITH THE PURCHASE OF IT....I WILL GET IT WORKING ON THE 11METER BAND. JUST DON'T WANT TO DO ANYTHING TO MAKE IT SOUND LIKE A GLORIFIED CB...LOL I HAVE OWNED A FT101EE BEFORE AND LOVED THE QUALITY OF THE TRANSCEIVER. WELL I WILL LISTEN FOR YOU ON 575 AND HOPEFULLY ME OR MY BROTHER 202(PHIL also)MIGHT HEAR YOU. WELL IF YOU KNOW OF ANY WEB SITES TO SEND ME TO FOR INFO ON THIS UNIT TO GET IT GOING PLEASE FEEL FREE TO WRITE ME DIRECT AT INDEPENDANT_RIDER@juno.com THANKS FOR WRITING ME BACK....SORRY I DIDN'T RESPOND SOONER BUT I FORGOT WHERE I HAD POSTED AT...(SIGN OF OLD AGE)
....WALTER...aka...OHIOBIKER "575"

Hey Walter,
Still having trouble with the 101Z?
I recently modified my ZD to 11 meters by robbing a couple of crystals from an old Tempo One parts rig that were "just" close enough in frequency to bring it up on 11. However upon crystal installation, (soldering) I had no rcv or xmit. :-( Come to find out, there is a xtl transformer for each crystal (band) on the board. You have to tune the corresponding xtl xformer until it resonates (begins to receive) ( Yay! ) Then you will be able to load and tune and enjoy the radio!!
Hope this helps.
Later,
Bluesman
