I am starting this topic to help Airplane1 with his question rather than bringing Archived posts back to the Open Area of the Forum.
From Airplane1,
I was thinking of putting a wilson 1000 roof mount antenna on the side of the tower for close local talking (5-15 miles). would this work and would adding small radials to bottom of it work?
just a idea I had.

Mobile antennas like to have some kind of
ground-plane under them (metal).
You could experiment with the added radials
if you wish. You could also build a standoff
that attaches to your tower and has a piece
of metal u-bolted to it, in which to sit the antenna on.
You could also just purchase a Top One
and mount it where you had your Maco 5/8.
What's is the purpose for this 2nd antenna?
Why not just use the Maco 5/8?
Or are you mounting a beam on your tower? |

Well the beam is going up next month(PDL-2) so I want something small. I am taking the 5/8 down cause I just do not want two big antennas up at same time to keep wife happy.
If beam does not satisfy me then the 5/8 will go up.

#1 you may find the Wilson being affected by the presence of the tower along side of this base loaded coil antenna. A SS whip may act better, but as RW says, either will need a good ground plane below the feed point and the tower, though substantial in mass, probably will not be enough ground plane for either to work properly. The stand off is a good way to remove the new antenna away from the tower and its bad affects, but you will still need a substantial ground plane for these 1/4 waves to work against.
If you mount to the side of the tower, place it to the side in which directions you mostly talk, cause the pattern will be somewhat skewed in the opposite direction or to the tower. |

just an idea.. why dont you stack a SS whip on top of the beam. there you should have good grounding, an awsome radials.. i think that would work very well for you, an its skinny enough the wife might not notice it...:} |

The PDL-2 will work good in the direction
it's pointed. Cbers in other directions will
be weaker and some you may not hear anymore
like you did on your Omni Maco 5/8.
If the cbers you talk to are basically in one
direction, then your ok.
I would make or purchase a standoff for your
tower and mount a fiberglass A-99 on it. |

how tall are the A99s? I just wanted something cheap and small. I have most of the operators in the same direction but two are in the opposite direction, one of them is only 8 miles away the other is 40 miles so they would be on back side.
I wish I could mount the 5/8 above the PDL-2 but the mast joint is not set up for pipe to go up through it and I would need to figure something else out.

The A-99 is 18ft in length. If they are all on at once your best bet is to point toward the
40 mile away station and pray you hear the others. Cause you probably won't hear the 40 mile station aimed in other directions. Sometimes you can split the difference between people. This was the problem i had here, so, i chose a Omni over a beam. It's nice to have a good Omni antenna also. As you soon will find out.
I honestly don't think a small mobile antenna will serve your purpose. But, that's what experimenting is about...Good Luck! |
