--Hi, all. Right now, my Maco V5/8 antenna is not guyed, on a pole about 25 feet at the feedpoint. Here pretty quick, I will be getting some 50 foot telescoping masts and of course, I plan on guying it. My question is, what material should I use to guy the mast? Traditional guy wire or something like Dacron? I thought that wire might somehow mess up my signal. I dunno. Thanks for your help. |

we need tech 833 to chime in here, but if i understood him correctly when he told me; you can just use the metal guy wires and dont worry about using insulators or anything.
i had always heard different, but im glad to know the truth.
again, hopefully he will post here and give you the "real" explanation.

As long as the guy wires are below the ground planes, use whatever you like. No insulators required. |

Most things I have read recommend guying every 10 feet. Of course, your house or mount aside the house acts as the first one but the every 10 feet thing is not a bad suggestion to follow. Not an over-kill by any means. If done properly looks good and keeps the vertical, vertical.

Mounting and Guying
1. After selection of a safe position of the mount, position anchor points for the guy wire as shown in figure 1.
2. Attach guy wire (4 places recomended) to the lowest guy ring and wrap wire at least 6 turns around itself, see figure 2.
3. Insert lower section of Telescoping Mast into mount,making sure the mast is in vertical position, and insure the guy wires at the anchor points.
4. After the guy wires have been secured for the lower section, a ladder may be leaned against the mast and tied in place.
5. Mount your antenna to the upper mast section, (1-¼ Dia.) and secure transmission line with standouts.
6. Raise the upper section of the mast with the antenna until it reaches its stop. Tighten clamp with hex bolt to secure upper section in place.
7. Using a person at each anchor point to hold guy wires, raise each section and secure in place as indicated in step 6. (working from the smallest dia.(1-¼) to the largest.)
8. After Telescoping Mast is fully extended, draw the guy wires taut (keeping the mast perfectly vertical) and secure to anchor points.

Starface, what about when you mount the mast against your house? Then what would be best guideline on the guy wires? I have a fifty foot mast that I want to use. It is heavy and heavy gage steel at that. But I still know that I need to use guy wire. Obviously, the ten foot ring cannot be used, as that height is below the roof line. The 20 foot ring will probably be the same way. Just start from 30 foot ring and go from there? Thanks.

As long as it's secured well to the house and
has a good solid footer.
Then start at the 30 ft mark. |

On a 36 ft push up mast I used Dacron rope. 2 sets of 4. Using a Pipe that was used for a C band dish out in the yard. Took 70 MPH winds last night. 50 ft I would use 3 sets of 4. |
