Just got the radio and haven't had time to really try it out yet but I have noticed that the needle sits almost all the way to the left of the meter.I have checked and adjusted my swr and have a good match. Is this normal? I am used to running a Cobra 29 for the last two years an have always seen the needle sitting around the 3 mark |

Does a signal make the needle move to the right? Does a really strong one make it move almost the whole way to the right?
Ideally, when there is no signal or background noise the needle would not move at all from the left. It would only move when there is noise or a signal. S-meters in CBs are not calibrated to any standard. They only show relative signal strength, so you have to interpret each one individually. It sounds like the one in your radio is adjusted the way I like them - no signal, no movement. |

Just my 2 cent's worth. What I believe you are seeing is the difference between an adequate receiver and an excellent receiver. The noise floor on the Grant is exceptionally low. With the engine running in my Kenworth, my Grant LT sits just to the left of one S-unit when all is quiet, and any signal beyond that is clearly copyable. That is, of course, after the NTE583/2SC2999 mod, but all that did is make an excellent receiver even better.
Ya gotta love the Grant! There's nothing like it. |

Nothing wrong with the Grant. Your just used to the 29. All radios even same models are different, some more than others. |

45 miles or so from vanillagorilla the other nite, while in my mobile, grant xl, on AM, no signal strength but i could hear hanks audio pretty well, same with 536 in west haven CT, & that was probably 65 or 70 miles. when it's quiet out, the xl IS quiet  |

3 S-units of noise on any of the Grants, 148s or Cobra 2000s?? I think there's something wrong if I get anything that moves the S meter on my Grant XL if there is no incoming signals.
The receive on a Cobra 29 is only so-so and nowhere near as good as the noise floor of the Grants. Radios the likes of the Grants can hear stations that other radios don't even know are there or are in the noise level.
And yes, the receive RF amplifier transistor change to the 2SC-2999 helps a lot on many radios.
