Does anyone know anything about these old radios? I know the General is 11meter cause it has crystals in it for 27 Mhz but the Vocaline I'm not so sure. I don't have the power cords. Are they worth trying to figure out a way to power them up? Also are they AC or DC? Or both? Thanks |

ILLEAGAL !!!!!!!! They cannot even be turn on they are not allowed AT ALL ! They are super regen radios on 460 mhz and will cause interferance to all the radios near that frequency! |

Fire 'em up? Sure! Alot were both AC and DC. Back in the days before the transistor was invented, vibrators and a step-up transformer were used to increase the voltage from batteries. The vibrator is basically a high frequency switch that oscillated the battery's power into the primary of the transformer and generated "fake AC"..

??????? 460 mhz? Hotwire. Dunno what that rant's about. Both are old Cb tranceivers from the '60's. The Vocaline is a single channel crystal and the General MC-6 is a about a 7 channel with tunable receive. http://www.oldtuberadio.com/radios/general/MC-6.html |

IF IT SAYS CLASS "B" or has 465 Meg printed on the lable or when you open it up has 2 " WIRES " with small plates attached going from a small tube it is ILLEAGAL !!!!!!! Regen receivers are not allowed on that part of UHF they do not meet part 15 rules at 465 mhz UNLESS they have a RF stage infrount of that 6c4 detector..... the Vocaline DOES NOT and the detector will act as a transmitter even on receive....... Check with the FCC but to be used even receivers have to have a part 15 acceptance..... |

It befuddles me about all the radios, amps, and illegal equipment talked about on this forum every day with no mention legality. A neat ol' antique tube type with tubes probably older that dirt, Hotwire would be lucky to get 1 watt out of them. Threads talking of 1kw+ comp amps on 11 meter and such doesn't even get a yawn. I doubt it would even make a dent in the radio spectrum. |

I understand and respect the concern for "doin' it by the book", but HotWire just asked if they were AC/DC and would they be worth foolin' with to see if he could get them to fire up. There are probably hundreds of these old rigs being uncovered in attics and basements every week, with the new found owners dying to see if it would still work. I, myself, love the neat old stuff, no matter what it is. |

"There are probably hundreds of these old rigs being uncovered in attics and basements every week" The fine for interfering on goverment frequencies which 455-465 has many including out jail is 7500-10,000 dollars. The use of non certified radios even by a end user can get you in BIG trouble ..... THIS IS NOT CB ......... However as for the old CB sets I FEEL MYSELF that it was wrong to blanket ban them but they did...... |

ALLEN ....... Your are confussing CLASS B UHF with CLASS D ( 27 mhz ) CB! IT IS NOT ILLEAGAL TO RECEIVE WITH A 27 MHZ CB TUBE SET only USE IT IT IS A major offence to use a class "B" CB radio today you get caught with one which you will since they radate a wide band of white regen noise over several miles if hooked to a outside antenna and see how many friends you make on GMRS/ goverment bands up there ..... |

Uhh, I owe Mr. Bruce an apology. After researching the Vocaline more, I found he is correct (as always! lol) about it transmitting in the 465mhz range on AM. Man, talk about old school stuff. Should make a nice coaster for that cold one, Hotwire.... |

OK since this is confusing here is what we are talking about ...... OLD TUBE TYPE RADIOS ....... There are 4 CB radios A B C AND D A and B are old bussness bands the class "B" became GMRS & FRS and unless the radio is transistor it is ILLEAGAL ..... PERIOD. Class "C" is remote control like your cars and planes ..... Class "D" is 27 mhz CB the 40 ch radios ..... NOT THE NOW OUTLAWED 23 ch sets. NOW it is not illeagal to use one of the 23's as a receiver but is IS illeagal to use any class "D" cb built before Sept 10 1976 to transmit with. That is the fact ....... And YES I LOVE THE OLD RADIOS however i DO NOT recomend them unless you are converting them to 10 meters ..... THAT is still leagal ..... |

BRUCE! No worrys! I promise never to turn them on ever! I don't have the power cords anyways. I will sqaush them with a sledge hammer and send you the pics ok? Better yet I will mail them to YOU for proper disposal! Joking aside, I understand fully that they are no longer approved by the FCC. Its just the curiosity that gets me going and I wanted to show them on the forum and find out a little info about them. I asked you about Vocaline long ago Bruce and you told me then they were illegal. I just did'nt know its illegal to turn them on! WOW! What a splatter box I have. Again Bruce thanks for your time and input and I take your warning seriously! They are just dust collectors on diplay in my collection. Allan thanks for the info and how they work. I would have never known. I learned a while back not to contest Bruce's info man! He does know his stuff. I knew the pic would get him going though! Just imagine if the pic showed the Vocaline turned on with antenna connected. Bruce would be boarding a plane to Indiana right now! Just pickin on ya Bruce! thanks guys |

Just the 'old school' Volcaline is a Class B, 475MHz AM radio from what Mr. Bruce states. The General is an old 11 meter from the '60's, and should be OK to play with... Zat right, Bruce? I'm learn'n! |

Bruce, Maybe not a good idea! You might be a bad influence on me. Mom told me to stay away from rebels like you! Hey maybe we can look for illeagal cb's and retune the back to be fcc approved? Think somebody can make good money starting a business like that? Imagine Bruce's Truck Stop CB Shop. Slogan could be..." Is that radio splattering all over the band, wattage peaked so high that you lock down the channel? Are you so loud that when you talk you blow up speakers? Come on in and lets get that limiter replaced. Remove those useless exter channels and put that wattage back to 4 where it belongs! Oh and you don't need that echo either, its outta here!" Truck drivers would be lined up for work to be done! You would have to hire someone to count all your piles of money! The band would be quiet again after retuning about 40 million cb's! Pat want's to be your first customer! Right Pat? |
