I would really like my radio to have a low key and give me good, but not crazy pep. Would my radio give me more forward power by replacing the final. I am dead keying about 2.5 watts right now and swings about 8. If I put a different final in will I be able to get the same key with more pep without distorting and soudning horrible? |

what radio? what meter are you using? is it a true PEP meter? what swing does it show on RMS scale? you have pretty effective key to swing ratio right now. 10 or 12 watts PEP won't be noticeable to the ear, or probably even an amp, though it should be fairly easily obtainable in most radios. |

Pat when changing finals is the any other parts that need to be changed and/or tweaked to get the radio talking it's best ? |

remember that to gain 1/2 an S-unit on someones meter, you have to double your power.
that means that if you hit the guy on the other end with an S-5 deadkey (2.5 watts out of your radio) and an S-6 swing (8 watts of swing from your radio), then to hit him with S-7 swinging to S-8 you would have to deadkey 10 watts and swing to 32 watts.
there is no way you are going to get your radio to do that by changing a final.
if you were to redesign the whole transmitter to utilize a bigger final, you would have spent more money for less bang than just buying a 1 pill amp for $40.00 or so.
its just not worth the time, money, or frustration.
if you are keying 2.5, and swinging 8, then you've got a GREAT setup for running an amp.
go get a KL300P from copper. about 80 dollars, and you'll be keying 40-50 watts and swinging to over 140.

i agree with KV, Rbeswick62. i did TOO many of those upgrades & it just ain't worth the effort-to me at least. i just do what needs to be done to get sufficient wattage from an amp.
no set-in-stone figures for changes. BUT, you may need to adjust windings to tuning coils, & change/add capacitors & resistors. very rarely did i get the results i wanted on the 1st attempt. it took several changes of parts values to get near what i wanted. |
