Yeap. First go buy a LED and forget using the regular bulbs. Cause all they do is burn out. Take the top cover off the radio. Look to the side of the meter and you'll see two red wires going into a small little grommet. Pull or pry it out and slide the grommet down the wire. Clip the wires as close to the bulb as possible. Strip the two wires back, put a little solder on them and solder the new bulb onto the wires. Slide the grommet back down over the bulb. Make sure you have no wire exposed outside the grommet. Push it back into the meter. A word of advice would be to make sure the radio is unplugged. Cause if not and especially if it's on you could have problems. If you wanna use the LED method, go to the shack and get the color you want. Get a bright one. Remove the knobs on the radio and the faceplate. You'll have to remove the covers also. Lift the meter out of the radio, it easily falls out. Look on the bottom side and you'll see it is open. Once you have the LED in the color you want, get a resistor to drop voltage if it's not designed for 12 volts. Prepare it like the bulb. Insert it into the meter. You might have to do a little pushing or prying depending on the size of the LED. Once it's in place, get some aluminum foil. Make sure the wires aren't exposed and use the foil to make a reflector inside the meter. That will help to keep just one end of the meter lit up. Put a small piece of tape over that hole and re-install everything in the reverse order you removed it. You should now have a meter light that won't burn out for a long time. It won't get as hot as a bulb and it won't dim down when you key up. |
