Hi. Ok, I know that it is advised to feed a 667v with about 4 watts. But, if the amp is off (but still inline obviously) is it then OK to feed it more than 4 watts?
Let's say I have a dial a watt on my radio (Let's say a magnum s9). With the 667 actually on, I would lower it to 4 watts. But with the amp off, I would like to dial the watt on the radio as high as possible. I am thinking this should be OK for the 667v as long as it is off. Any thoughts? Thanks. |

You will see the Texas Star website shows 4 or 20 watts input. It is considered a LOW DRIVE Amplifier with 1-2SC2290 Pre-Driver driving 4-2SC2879 finals.
Since they do not mention a maximum input with it OFF I have never ran over 20 watts through one (ON or OFF) and never had a problem with any of the Texas Star product's.

OK. Thanks. The reason why I ask is because let's say I have a magnum radio that swings to 40-50 watts. It would be a real pain to have to always take the 667v out of line to use the magnum at 40-50 watts. I suppose I could just leave it at 4 watts and simply turn the 667 v down to about 50 watts. But I was just curious. Thanks. |

I would'nt try it James. Even with it off your still transmitting through its componets and something may not be happy with the extra juice. My luck if I tried it I would forget I have the radio at full blast and then decide to power up the amp and then POOF! This is why I prefer internal adjustments only. This happened one day when I accidently hit the hi power button on my connex and not noticed it until I powered on the DX500 and keyed the mic. Too much dead key made the amp very mad. Luckily I was looking at the power supply amp meter at first key. Amp survived the brutal punishment. |

NOT ADVOCATING BUT....I generally have no problem putting whatever I want through an amp with it off. As HW said though you MUST remember to turn it down before turning on the heat.
Been there..done that...smelled the smoke 
James...I'd be willing to bet it ALL that your Magnum sounds great for MILES with a 4w DK swinging up to wherever it wants. Rarely will you need to jack it up to 8-10w DK anyway.
I had the S9 and still use the Delta. Anything over a 6w DK starts to make your modulation a little clipped sounding....high topping if you know what I mean.

back when i had my 72 OLDS ! I was running a no name amp that done 85-90 watts with a Connex 3300
and behind that amp i had a Boomer 600 and never had much problem with the small amp on but i had to make shure it was off when i kicked the bigger amp on ! but one day my wife was in the car and i told her to turn on the other amp and POW ! both amps was shot !
now its one amp at a time ! or no amp at all !
