Just recieved it today and I discoverd that it doesn't have "Automatic Sideband" like the Palomar 225 does. I assumed it did but you know the saying about when you assume right.
So what can i do to this to make it not chatter on sideband?

Are you sure? Sorry for the stupid question. 
Are you hitting it with enough ssb power? My hi-drive will do that if hit with less then 20pep.

This isn't suposed to be a high drive amp though, My galaxy 959 does somewhere around 20 on SSB. The info on the amp says "Input power: 4 Watts" I'm guessing that it isn't made to do SSB. I've seen what this Palomar Elite 300 amp. can do on sideband, and that is a very good job. With lotsa flowers on the report. My friend who has one, uses it on his base and runs sideband with it most of the time, and very little AM.
Guess it all depends on what you're driving it with, and the output power off the driving radio. He drives the Elite 300 with a Grant XL set up almost the same as mine at about 12-14 watts output sideband, and I do almost as good running bare foot, but I have the beam in my favor, and he runs just the Imax 2000.
But I want to think that a good share of the now on market low drive cheaper amps. are now being made in China or others close by.
Very well could be that you're over driving the Elite 300 at 20 watts input.
Over driving these small amps. burns them up quicker than any other reason.
The 4 watts you spoke of is the AM dead key, input to the amp.
The SWR between the radio and amp. and then again between the amp and antenna has to be closely monitored.
Sounds like your Galaxy needs to be turned down a few watts on sideband. |

The Galaxy DX-959 has variable power knob on it. I've tried it being set lower to higher and it doesn't affect the chatterness at all.
I've tried the Palomar amp on the base, Pres Lincoln with a D-104 and it chatters inbetween words on that set up too.
In the mobile on the Galaxy It does get with the program on SSB power wise, but it unkeys fast inbetween every word. I mean you have to talk like an auctioneer to keep it from chattering.
When i hooked it up to the base on the Lincoln, On SSB the D-104 is set a lil high, it makes about 1.5 watt carrier when you key the D-104 due to it picking up fan noise from the computer. The Palomar Elite still chatters inbetween words with that kind of background noise.
I'm just wondering if i can add a capacitor somewhere in the Palomar to keep it from unkeying on SSB quite as easily. ?? |

Well my semi-solution, I put the palomar elite 300 on the Lincoln base and it doesn't chatter as bad as it did in the mobile for SSB. Then i put the palomar 225 on the Galaxy in the mobile and it works great and no chattering between words on SSB.
It'll due for now. |
