I have a old ugly 142GTL I picked up that I want to play with while saving for a S9 or similar. I have not played with one since the 80's. Back then the only RX Mod. was the 7.8Mhz Xtal filter. Are there any new RX mod.s that have came out since then? I was reading another thread reguarding a Cobra 2000GTL, that mentioned changing TR14 I think it was for a NTE/2SC someting. Is there a similar Mod for this one? Think it will be fun to play with a little, while I wait and plan on a modern radio.

BTW is there a simple mod to get a few channels above 40, without buying a expo kit, I don't want to spend a lot on this ugly beat-up spray painted radio (not bad for $5.00, inside is virgin).

Thanks...

replace TR 9 with a 2SC2999. if you cant get that one, use an NTE107, it will work well, but the 2SC2999 is the better part.
retune L9, and L10 for max S-meter reading on empty channel using only the proper plastic tuning tool.
you can get a set for 3.99 at rad shak.

replace D1,D2,D21,D22 with 1N6263 diodes, or NTE583's (same deal as above)

pretty much any mod that can be done to the 148/2000 chassis can be adapted to the 142gtl by comparing schematics and finding the corresponding part numbers.
(tr9 is tr14, etc...)
good luck,
matt

Thank's for the great info! Got to dig around in some boxes, but I got the Sams for both boards around here someplace left over from the old days. Man I used to have a nice test bench set-up back in the 80's, but a Spanish CB shop opened a block away. Nothing but the sound of them showing off noise toys and amp.s (holla, holla) for 100 up and a 100 down! Got pissed and out of radio. I have moved 2 states since then, now I am out in the country (noise free), and interested again after finding this radio in a yard sale.
tnx

Yeh, went to sleep every night dreaming of waking up and making a trip to the gas station with a bottle ;-) BTW, ordered the parts from Mouser today, and my radio room/workshop is almost done. Just got to decide on an antenna. Thinking of the maco 3 elm. just did a post to try and get some info. on that 4 elm. sira I think it was. Just listening off my 6M loop for the moment. Man I wish they would let you upload a normal size photo, I would love to post a photo of my old radio room. I tried to downsize but man-yuk. I may have to post it on QRZ.com, just don't really like mixing CB/Ham hobbie's. TTYL...

i would go with the maco.
they are solidly built. m103 or m104 will do you proud.

sirio is the brand you are thinking of, they are imports and while i dont know about them specifically; imports have a tendency to cheap out on the hardware etc...

as for posting photos;

its not the physical size of the photo that needs to be reduced. its the FILE size.
and that is done with compression.
you do NOT need to crop your photos unless you want to leave something out of the frame.

you will need some software that will allow you to compress the file, and alot of us around here use www.xat.com

its free, and you will be able to compress the file size down to less than 50kb without messing up the picture quality.
check it out,
matt
