My question would be: Can you drive an amp(say KLV1000p) with a small transistor amp(Palomar 200 in medium drive setting to achieve 100 Watts) By a 4 Watt Radio. AND is it possible to get the SWR down to a resonable Level, Say 1.5:1 to 2.0:1.... What might be Possible problems that you Might encounter if this is possible. |

i believe you can do this, although i have never done it myself. the palomar would be considered an exciter. jumper lengths would probably be a critical factor so you should have different lengths around just in case, and maybe even a low pass filter after the palomar so that the KLV doesnt see a bunch of harmonics. that being said, there may be someone on here who has tried it and will be able to say for sure whether or not it would work. the only possible reason i could see for doing all this would be if you already had the KLV1000P. because the KLV1000 only takes a 3-4 watt drive to acheive full output. so whats the deal? do you already own a KLV1000p? matt |

Have put my order in, but won't be able to use it for another 2 mo.s at least till I get my code down. After reading in the forums, I found that the S9 will not be quite adequate to push the KLV close to the top. My thought was rather than kill my order to by a small amp to run KLV at home and the little one could also go mobile if strapped to the radio, this would make moving it back and forth a little easier till I can afford a real radio to run in the house. |

yes you can, Rbeswick62.... radio>>2 pill>>4 pill>>meter>>16 pill>>meter>>antenna check swr/reflect with NOTHING in line 1st, then each piece individually til you get what you want from start to finish, sometimes it can be tricky but it can be done...in your case, leave out the extra amp |

i guess i can understand that; if you are planning on running the KLV with a future HF rig, then yeah, keep it. pat, you have a 2 pill driving a 4 pill? am i missing something here? matt |

If I understand correctly just push the KLV with the S9 (straight up 40 Watts input will be) crystal clear, no extra drive required. Say about 80 Watts am-fm-cw / 300 Watts ssb ? |

i dont think so, the KLV1000 is made to be driven with 1-3 watts dead key and about 20 watts of swing. i dont know how it will act if given the 50 watts of swing the S9 would throw at it. the KLV1000P is made to be driven by a 60 watt carrier and will handle over 100 watts of swing. the S9 will not have a high enough deadkey to power this amp. i do not and have never owned one, these are just my findings from reading the review here on the forum. here it is: http://www.copperelectronics.com/cgi-bin/discus4/show.cgi?tpc=7750&post=40409#POST40409 i imagine that the S9 could be made to work with the KLV1000, but i dont know. hopefully you will get more opinions on this from those who actually have this equipment. good luck, matt |

i was just using that as an example, kid . 2 key/15 swing, 25 key/250 swing, 200 key/800 swing, 1000 key/3500 swing. a 5 or 6 pill into 16 would do the same job-200 key/800 swing for 1kw/3.5kw. my grant XL keys 2/swings 15....i don't need 2 driver boxes...right now |
