My question:
when I use the radio with top gun on, and power set all the way down and mic gain at about 5, the tx light will blink when the needle swings all the way to the right. when I dead key, it will stay a constant red so I know the swr is ok. Then playing around, I moved the power to about 5 (12 o'clock) and it wont blink when the needle swings. Just wondering if I should be concerned about something or if anyone else has noticed this on their radio? Let me know if anyone has any thoughts....

Thanks,

My S9 does the exact same thing and my swr is almost flat. I don't run mine with the power all the way down, so I never see it.

Thanks moonraker. I do the same thing, if it's at 5 I don't see it either so that's where it stays and no bad report either so I guess everything is working fine. Just must be one of those things....

Thanks again

I don't have an S-3, I've got the S-9 also. I had never seen this happen until yesterday.

I took the radio out of my truck and wanted to just check things out and make sure everything was still ok. My lowest deadkey reading was about .8 watts. So I felt like I needed to set it up to 1 watt.

My setup has been listed before but I'll run it down again. From the radio there is 12ft of jumper to my amp that I made from the coax off my Wilson 5000 magnetic antenna. From the amp to the antenna is 14.5 ft of LRM400 Ultra-Flex. My SWR is about 1.3:1 and both amp & radio are grounded directly to the battery. There is also extra ground strap added to the amp & radio that goes to the chassis at different points. The cab is also grounded with strap.

Once I put the radio back into the truck I experienced the exact same thing. The transmit light goes red when the radio is keyed, like it should. If I speak loud enough to get the radio to swing the meter to 50 then I see that blinking also. My key is turned all the way down so my amp will only key around 30 or 40 watts. The mic gain is at about 3 o'clock and the Top Gun is always on.

Does your meter swing to 50 or all the way to the right all the time? Mine doesn't in my truck. It does in the shack on the base antenna or dummy load. And it's a rapid swing, where in the truck it's a tad bit sluggish and doesn't make it to 50 all the time. Anyone know why?

Since I am not the only one experiencing this problem, then I assume it's a common thing and is suppose to happen. Anyone with any insite on this matter?

Thanks.

The meter on the radio swings to 50 (about). I have used it as a base and mobile and didn't see any difference in swing.

Well, I notice hard swing on my s3 when the modulator is on and dead key down, dead key up, less swing.....?????? I'm not getting any bad reports like I said above but I'm now feeling better that this type of thing has not just happened to me and this radio.

Does a S3 cover 11 meter band. How do they perform with a copper tune?

Yes, with a simple mod done with a jumper that is provided for you. My s-3 does well for me straight out of the box...probably better with a copper tune..
