im thinking of glueing a couple of magnets to the top of my SWR meter and sticking it up under my mobile CB.

will this cause any problems?
i know magnets can wreak havoc with a TV picture, but have no idea what the effect on anything RF related would be.
i want to go buy them soon, so i would appreciate a quick go or no go from someone "in the know".

thanks,
matt

Not sure about magnets, but, i use good
quality Velcro with much success.
Amps, radios ect.

The only concern is that it might effect the needle movement of the meter, although I'd say that's fairly unlikely. There should be no effect on the CB though.

Why do you need a VSWR meter mobile? Tune the antenna and be done with it. You can tell if there is a change by watching the needle of your radio's meter, then check it with the meter.

thanks for the reply road warrior.

velcro is what im wanting to step up from.
i like it, but it lets the equip. move around a bit too much for my situation.

nothing big, just a bit of a pet peeve.

Would take a pretty hefty magnet to hold it. Just for giggles, key up the rig and wave a magnet in close proximity and see what happens. I'm think'n the needle is going to wig out, since it uses a small coil in there to move the needle. Same principle as a generator. Coiled wire passing a magnet to get current. In this case, a false reading. Can't you fab a small bracket and utilize the screws that hold something else under the dash, like the glove box door or something?

Matt,
I have used sizeable magnets to hold mobiles on top of power supplies in the past and havnt noticed any ill effects.the s-meter seemed to read the same as usual.

wow, thanks for the replies guys!
i appreciate it very much.
to answer the questions:

the meter on my radio is small (148gtl) and while driving, i would wreck if i had to look closely at it.
my meter has three big movements on it, and makes it really easy to see everything with just a quick glance.
plus i have an analog meter fetish. the more the better. LOL

yes, i could fab up a bracket pretty easily, but it would involve drilling holes in something, and removing the radio, so i just thought, "if i could use four magnets on top of the meter, it would be VERY simple to do. just a little hot glue and BAM!

as for the velcro, i work in the theater industry and we use velcro for a million and one different things, and thats why i use it alot, i have access to large quantities of it for free, and its good stuff too!
when i took the meter out of the car recently to add lighting to it, i peeled of the velcro and it left a bunch of sticky goop behind. summer here is just too hot for it.

going by dennis' experience, im going to try it, and post the results.
thanks again guys,
matt

I was refering to the SWR meter. I drive big truck and have taken small magnets, and just for the heck of it, waved it front of the dash gauges, and have the needle swing from one side to the other. Just some input. Every situation is different, I'm sure. Do your thing, Kid.

On your Analog meter fetish kid.
Personally, i have never kept a SWR meter
in-line on base or in the mobile.
Come to think of it, when i had my old Cobra 139 23 channel base, i would sit a magnet mount antenna on the top of the radio which had a metal cabinet. Don't remember any ill effects. Still have the radio and the antenna is still stuck to the top of it...

thanks guys, i'll post the results.

wanna hear somethin' funny?

i feel dumb.
i just realized that the speaker in my radio has a big magnet in it, which is RIGHT ON TOP of the PC board.
if it doesnt cause a problem, the others shouldnt either.
wow, this was way too much brain energy to spend of such a small thing.
thanks again,
matt
