I am thinking of making a homemade grnd plane for my vertical, taking 18 gauge wire cutting a length of 4 to 7 feet in length , bending the end and putting each under a onepipe clamp, any suggestions, and do you think it will work

what kind of antenna?
how will you hold the radials out at a 45* or 90* angle?
could work, but must be done right.
details please.

ant is a homemade vertical, I was hoping the heavy wire #18 is stiff enough to hold out there at the correct angle

im pretty sure that the first wind gust or errant bird would ruin your day relying on just the wire.
if you tied rope to the ends of the radials and tied them off like guy wires, that would work.
use four, make them 102" long, and angle them at 45*.
im interested in your homemade antenna.
would youmind giving me the specs, and all that good stuff?

I built one to use as a backup, using a 102in whip as the radiator and a single 102in wire as the counterpoise. The bottom of the antenna is about 10ft and to keep the wire taut I bent the end slightly, tied some kite string on the end and anchored the kite string to the ground with with an eyebolt that I had lying around. SWR is 1.3 and gets out pretty well. |

I use 4 102" whips and a wilson 6' fiberglass antenna (tunable tip).I bent the corners of a peice of 3/16 plate steel up to50 degrees drilled holes for 102" whips in the corners and center of plate for the wilson .Plan to get an Imax 2000 but for the moment this is my base antenna get 1.2 to 1.3 swr

Why bother getting the IMAX, Streaky sounds like you have something that works just as well as an IMAX. I have an IMAX, it works great. I talk all over the place, from the west coast and well past the east coast. I bet your setup will work just as well as my IMAX especially if you have proper grounding.
