Heard a local on his base today - said he had a mobile for sale. I asked him what he had and he said a Uniden Grant XL. I asked what he wanted for it and he said $40. It's made in the Phillipines. I bought it for $40.

In your opinion, was this a good deal?

Just curious.

Steelworker2001,

If "YOU" are happy with the deal and it does what "YOU" want it too and "YOU" think it was a Good Deal then it was a Good Deal and that is all that count's and it make's no difference what anyone else think's.

Personally if I want something I do not care what it cost's or what anyone else think's as long as it make's ME HAPPY!

Well - so far I'm happy with the purchase. Got a quick radio check and they said it sounded good. I was just curious if I made a good buy or not.

Back in the late 80's I had a Uniden PC-66 that was one of the best Am radios I've ever had. Bought it in Florida. I've been looking for an older Uniden and just could not pass this one up.

Thanks for the reply Lon.

I paid $60 for my first about 2 years ago from a friend...and it was a relatively ugly virgin other than a clip at Q24.
If it makes you feel better...I'd have bought it for that price!

Hank CEF ~ Best of luck with it and hope to hear it soon

Simply put, yes.. I'd say it was good deal if everything works. Kinda like the 148gtl I picked up for $10..

I gave $70.00 for the 148-GTL posted in member pictures. Same radio as the Grant-XL, the 148 has all the standard mods, and then some not to well known as standard mods, I felt like I had stolen it when I walked out of the radio shop, with a big smile on my face, where I bought it.

I must admit - it has the quietest recieve of any radio I think I've ever owned. I still have not got used to how quiet it is. And I've had nothing but good reports on air - AM only - have not tried it on SSB yet.

Thanks for the replys guys - I feel better already :-)

You haven't used it on SSB yet!?! That's where these radios really shine.

Ask a SSBer (someone who operates SSB 99% or more of their radio time) and you'll really hear glowing reports about these radios. I'm a SSBer as are lots of other folks here, and I you'll find we all have the same opinion of this and other Uniden SSB chassis - they are OUTSTANSTANDING.

Dude...you stole that radio. I've seen them go for over $200 on auction sites. Enjoy one of the best type-accepted radios ever built! :-)
