I have a 148 cobra and palamor 300 elite in my work car. I put my new magnum s9 in my wifes jeep. It has to many bells and whistles for her. Shes frustrated with it. I think they are a great radio. I would switch with her but I like to use a linear, just an old habit and a box for the S9 would cost. I am going to trade out the s9 for another palamor 300 and a cobra 29 or maybe a galaxy dx 949. Is the 949 a decent cb on am? If anyone has a opinion about one I would appreciate it, thanks.

Hi Hawkeye:
If you want to keep the S-9,get a Texas Star 350HD,or any HD(High Drive) Amplifier.
Those Amps are designed to take high power input, your S-9 is TX around 45 watts output.

trading that magnum for a galaxy would be a big step down IMO.

you can buy a 300 elite for about 80.00, and a galaxy 949 for 130.00.

you are still over $100.00 less than the price of the S9.

i would not make that trade if i were you.

remember, to increase your signal by 1/2 S-unit on someones receiver, you must double your power out. thats just the way it works.
so, that palomar is putting out about 150 watts PEP, and the magnum is putting out about 50 watts PEP.
thats a difference of less than 1 S-unit on any station you talk to.

i would just trade with her, and save for a big amp for the S9.

just my 2 s-units worth,
matt

Hawkeye, I used to own a Galaxy 959 which is the same as the 949 with a freq counter. They are great radios on AM! To a pro the SSB is lacking a little bit but can be taken care of by a good tech. Lots of mods can be done to these radios also and they are real easy to do!
