They can be used on beams that already have
1 quad wire.
Do they work? NO

I've heard the same thing. Bad for your antenna. It's one of those gimmicks. I've also read it somewhere where they did testing on it and had all this technical data about it not being good.

The QUAD was first used at HCJB radio and it like the YAGI-UDA array has a long history and much data to back up it's design.
ANY changing of the reflector OTHER than LARGER loops ( wires ) would have the effect of making the reflector ALSO try to be a director.

Unlike some adds Dr. Larson and NBS both published data on antennas back 30 years ago that gives real results and real field data........

What about taking a single wire and running it around the reflector like on the pdl2. Would that help with rejection?

Quad rejection wires are my favorite.
But, pain in the drain in areas that have
a bad and windy climate.

The single wire would have to be tuned for the correct frequency in order for it to have the proper effect. On a cross polarized yagi, this would not happen because the length from tip to tip to tip to tip would be too long.

Hollowpoint is correct the wire length has to be right but I have never see a set of DATA either way.

does not seem that difficult to me. Read the instructions on the pdl2, it gives you the length of the wire. I would Imagine that maybe the reflector on the pdl2 is possibly the same length as the maco. If it is then there should be no problem , Right? Maybe?
