--Well, I guess both. For some reason, his is unlocked, and mine is locked. All I know is that I can key up on AM with the 2950DX, and then with another radio nearby that is receiving on SSB, it will not change frequency (the carrier does not change in pitch on the other radio receiving SSB).

I did a search and found this for an RCI 2950DX:

Remove D63 located near VR8 TX Frequency pot. At J28 cut the black wire close to the connector and solder it to point marked 8V on J29.

Removing D63 disconnects the TX Frequency potentiometer from the clarifier circuit. Cutting the black wire removes the receiver 8 volts from the clarifier potentiometer. And connecting the black wire to J29 8V applies 8 volts constant to the clarifier potentiometer.

I would do a search for the modification because it shows photos of the board.

Why would you want to do that mod to the 2970DX? What is the benefit? Or what would it do that the big knob at the top left does'nt do already? Sorry, I never owned an RCI 2970 but I do have a similar rig with the same type controls and never had a problem.

Mdiver,

ALL of the radio's you mention have a LOCKED Clarifier / RIT from the factory.

Unlocking the Clarifier/RIT means that the Clarifier/RIT will change both the Transmit frequency as well as the Receiver frequency.

If the Clarifier/RIT is unlocked the radio can tune between channels or even slide a full channel or more, depending on the radio's capabilities.

The VR9000 Course clarifier slides on TX and has a 10khz switch.

The MAGNUM S-9 has a +10kHz Switch

The Ranger 2950DX has a RIT (Receiver Incremental Tuning) Also known as a Clarifier.

Hope this help's,

Lon

You do not need to unlock the clarifier you have direct access to the VFO. Simply move the carrot/cursor to the last digit in the freq. read out and go from their. You can unlock the clarifer is you want to but it is not going to give you as much bandwidth and you have to rember to return it to 12 0'CLock postion when done or you will be off freq. The 2950's have never come from the factory with open clarifiers.

ANother theing that should be mentioned for people that are new to SSB. If you are only talking to one other person on SSB then an a closed RIT/Clarifer is fine as each person can adjust his recieve to math the other users TX signal. If you want to talk to 2,3,5,15....people in a group then you have to have a way to all get on freq. for both transmitt and recieve for it to be fun and effective. This is when people with a SSB CB would need/want an unlocked clarifier. The RCI has direct access to the VFO so you can simply tune your radio to any freq. with in the band.

I was thinking that the s-9's clarifier wasn't unlocked due to the 10kc switch?

No, the S9's clarifier IS "unlocked" but doesn't "slide" 10 kcs in either direction. The less "slide" the esier it is to opperate. In comes the 10 KC switch...

good rule of thumb, any 10 meter export without a VFO usually comes from the factory with an unlocked clarifier.(S-9,VR9000,all SSB Galaxy models,ETC) If the radio has a VFO( RCI 2950,2970, Uniden 2510,2600,Lincoln) Most always they come with a locked clarifier as you can use the VFO to slide on TX and dont need the clarifier for that purpose

But most radios that has the clarifier unlocked on them allows the radio to move the rx&tx together a full 10kc either way from 12oclock on the knob. Hmm curious how that works if it don't move anything being unlocked?

This is why I think exports have the 10 kc switch.
A normal cb has 40 channels. We know that in between channels 3 and 4, 7 and 8, and so on that we have the "A" channels.
Now an export that is "channelized" could go ahead and add those "A" channels in there without having to hit a 10 kc switch but thats going to throw off the channels we are used to from the common 40 channel rigs. The trucker channel 19 would actually be different from 27.185 and to get that freq the channel display would read higher like channel 24 or so. So not to confuse the common cber they build the exports to match what we are used to in channels. If you noticed on exports that even if you are out of band you still need the 10kc switch to get the freqs that are in between channels 3 and 4 and so on. All the "bands" on a channelized export rig share the same channel plan.
