Hi everyone, long time no see, been busy this summer. Anyways, Im looking into buying myself a birthday present this coming month and can't decide on what I want, I've narrowed it down to either a Magnum S9, Cobra 200gtl or the new Stryker 440hp. Now I know Pat will say S9S9S9S9S9, lol but I wouldnt mind trying something else, I already own a OmegaForce S45 and I love the receive!! I dont even use the squelch because the receiver is so quiet. I need to know how the receive is on the Cobra and stryker, Receive quality is really important to me. I like the looks of the cobra 200GTL but I dont want it if the receive is poor, likewise on the Stryker. So if someone with these radios could give me there opinions on the receive of these radios that would be great. I really like the S9 but the high cost sort of turns me off of it. If I did get one it would have to have the Nitro knobs. Thanks everyone very much for the help. |

cant comment on the stryker as i have never heard nor operated one, but it is an AM only radio, and IMO that alone puts it at the bottom of the list.
between the S9 and the 200gtl, there is no comparison.
it really is S9 all the way.
think of it this way.
the guys at magnum are in the business of making 10 meter rigs, make a good business doing it, and have their finger on the pulse of what the radio consumer wants.
the guys at cobra decided that they would try to enter this market with a new design, and cut every corner possible trying to get it to market with a decent price tag.
that price tag is all they care about. that and maintaining a decent profit margin. see what im getting at here?
who do you think cares more about giving the REAL radio consumers a quality product?
the guys that specialize in it, or the guys who can take it or leave it and just sell radar detectors?
also, there have been numerous service bulletins and recalls associated with the new cobra 10 meter rigs. a very bad sign. did they even DO ANY resaerch and development? highly doubtful. that would cut into the profit margin.
and lastly, the cobra 150gtl sells for about 180.00 and cobra is offering a $100.00 rebate if you buy one.
to me, that is another VERY bad sign; especially when you consider how important profit is to them.
so obviously, im saying S9 all the way.

I have a birthday coming up too Scooby! I asked the same question you did. I own the Connex 4800 right now and its awesome but I have been wanting an S-9 for a long time. After my research I decided on the S-9!
I would say the recieve of the S-9 is the same or better than the S-45! |

Big_rigger,
Is this your own Personal 1st hand experience you have had with a Magnum S-9 that you purchased new or rumors you have heard?
The reason I ask is Copper Electronic's has sold between 300 and 400 S-9 Radios to Copper Customer's / Copper Forum Member's with less than 10 being returned for problem's to the MAGNUM Service Center for Repair.
And ALL Radio's returned to MAGNUM for Repair have been Repaired under the Factory Warranty and Upgraded at not charge if needed in 24 hours or less and back out the door to the Customer (unless they arrived on a friday).
And MAGNUM Radio is the ONLY MANUFACTURER you can call and talk with Sam Lewis the Owner DIRECT if you have a problem to get that problem resolved INSTANTLY.

I have two Magnum S9's. One as a Base, and one in the truck. The truck radio is over 2 years old, and I have had ZERO problems with either one.
My vote goes to the S9 |

im kind of curious what you meant too; when you make a statement like that, you have to back it up with some details.
was this your radio, or what someone else said happened to theirs?

Well I'll chime in on this one too. Ive had 2 S-9s and I was really disappointed in them. One drifted like a sail boat 24/7. Went to the factory twice and came back the same way both times. The second one was worse yet. It would loose power intermittently going down the road, 2 cold solder joints were found and still didnt solve the problem. It still looses power intermittently at times. Dosent matter if Im moving down the road or sitting still. When it decides to shut down, it shuts down. This radio also would change channels by itself going down the road. You would be talking away one minute on 19 and the next you would be on 20,22,17, where ever it decided to land. I havent owned one but have seen and heard a stryker. They look good and sound awsome. Cant comment on the durability of them yet |

well i am going by what reputable radio shops not hack shop have talked to me about not trying to make anybody upset but there are better quality radios out there |

you're not going by the advice of someone who actually sells radios for a living are you?
thats like buying a car just because the salesman says its the best one.
sure, its the best one for HIM to sell, because HE makes more money.
remember that different manufacturers have different wholesale and list prices, and some are much more profitable for the radio shop to sell, regardless of the quality of the product.
this isnt the same shop that told you to buy the 200GTL is it?

Hello everyone...been busy as well...Scoobydoo I am the proud owner of a S9 and have grown to really like it. I've only used it for about 5 or 6 weeks, but it is a great radio..I enjoy working on old radios but I had Copper do their thing on this one and I so far have not been dissappointed at all...I got the nitro version because my wife thought it looked cool and it will eventually be our base unit, but the nitro is a little too bright in the big rig at night..if I get a second one for the truck I think it will be a standard model...I would really like to try an Omega, but I got tired of waiting for them to get in stock, meanwhile I am really enjoying the S9 45-50 watt version... |

MAGNUM S-3200B REVIEW
We LOVE our 1st Edition (Before 2004) S-3200B and use it EVERY DAY and EVERY SUNDAY for the CEF RADIO CLUB NET's with the JCD-201M Desk Mic and a FC-347 Freq Counter.
Check out the CEF Net Area and read what other CEF MEMBER's have said about it when making contact's with us during the net's. 
Or do a Search for Troublemaker and read his comment's also.

there is nothing wrong with my 200,and as far as who told me is a well known shop who sells magnum as far as the price you can get the 2970 for about 370.00 which is a much better radio |

I will throw my 2 cents in here also, I have the 257 blue face and have been told it sounds good, also it's been in 2 different vehicles and it's going on 2 years old I believe and I have had no problems with it as of yet, I personally love the magnum line and my next radio will most likely be another magnum, hopefully the s-9-175...hehe.

I can also vouch for the 257. People ask me who modded my ham HF rig! I have had nothing but glowing reports from it and it was a wonderful step from a "CB" that prompted me into the ham world (being able to listen to 10M and get used to a radio with "feature, not "bells and whisles").
It lived in my truck for a long time then was put in the home as a base, it sounds too good for the truck! This was one of the few purchases I have made in my life that I simply can't nit-pick ONE thing on!

I'm a convert......once i heard CEF783 on my MAGNUM 357 at full tilt i have come to the conclusion that if it hasn't got YAESU, KENWOOD etc. stamped on it, it don't come within a bulls roar of it. Just my 2 bobs worth.

Well, I will toss in my 2 cents worth also. I have a Styker 440HP and Connex 4600 turbo. Both radio's have excellent transmit audio, but I think the recv in the Styker is much better, more sensitive less prone to engine nose, and such. Connex 4600 turbo puts out about twice as much as the Styker, but again the recv on the Styker is to me, much better. I have owned also a S6 and didnt care for that recv, sold it. I am looking at perhaps a Mini-Mag...since space is limited, and would be interested in hearing what people have to say about this model. But, thats my experience of just a few of the radio's I have had. |
