I'm going to run my DX500V with a Magnum S-9. It is my preference to have no more than a 2 watt deadkey at all times into the amp. My question. With or WITHOUT the Topgun Modulator, using the variable power control, can I obtain a steady 2 watt deadkey and full swing output. I'm hoping that the variable power controls only the swing and the deadkey stays the same regardless. Or is the idea behind the TopGun Modulator to run amps effiecently?

with a dk as low as 2 watts you may have to have the top gun on to get full swing out of the radio. The power out from the amp may not change much or any with it on or off. I get more rms power from my amp with my top gun on.

The variable power controls the dk, but as the dk gets lower you won't get quite as much swing with the top gun off. Turn the top gun on and you get full swing no matter where you set the dk.

I don't thing it will swing enough to hurt your 500 but if you want to lower the swing turn the top gun off and turn down the mic gain.

Ok I think I get it now. What I am used to is radios like my Connex 4800. It has a low and hi power switch in the front. I had to set the deadkey to where I wanted it inside the radio. I get 2 watts deadkey on low and 9 watts on high. The swing is the same 38 watts. Now that I'm thinking about it I'm not sure if I get the same swing on hi and low or not.

Back to the S-9. So the variable knob basically controls the deadkey and a bit of the swing. I'd imagine the deadkey to swing ratio would always stay where it should be. Am I making sense? When you are driving an amp there is that perfect wattage setting I like to call " The Butter Zone"
Maybe I just need to shut up and buy that S-9.

Moonraker pretty much has your answer Hotwire,
Without the TGM "on" your power range is pretty much linear. Set the DK on the variable power at 2w and I saw about 25PEP....turn the DK up to around 7w and see the 35-40w PEP.
Turn the TGM on and she "SO-Wangs" to 40w with whatever DK you prefer down to nearly 1w.
Do-it....Do-it

OK Now I understand! Thanks Fellas! Will Probably run without Top Gun most of the time and when I need that extra punch I'll turn it on. Will be my special little button. The detonation switch! You know. When those boneheads start trying to buzz in my ear like little mudduck mosqweetos.
Hank you know the performance of my Connex 4800 so hopefully you will be able give me some feedback when I contact ya with the S-9.
After I do my thing setting up the S-9, if it out performs my 4800 I will be very very impressed! The Conny is set at 2 watts deadkey 38 watts swing. Gonna be interesting playing around with the S-9. Whatever numbers I get CLARITY is of most importance and will determine if a radio sits on the shelf or gets heard in DX land!
