I just got a used Magnum s9 off an internet auction and it has a couple issues. With the topgun modulater off I can only adjust dead key power from 2 watts to about 8 watts I thought I would be able to dead key the full 40 watts,is this right? It does swing full power its like the modulater is always on.Also the roger beep has very low sound I checked listening to another radio and I could just barley hear it.How could this be fixed?
thanks for any Help

Sounds pretty close...Mine both DK from 1 watt and swing to 52, with the RF power turned down, and a 10 watt DK, and a 52 watt swing, with the RF power turned up .

Roger beep I can not hear through the talkback, but I can hear it in the radio, if that makes sence. However... I have been told that the beep is LOUD on the recieving end.

2-8 watts dead key is plenty. I wouldn't key more than 10 with a dual final radio. The 40 watts that is advertised is pep "swing".

You can't hear the roger beep through the talkback, but if you checked it on another radio...i don't know whats wrong.

The "modulator" is more of a speech processor. On mine I have to turn on the top gun to get full swing at low deadkeys.

I'll agree with 1861, everything sounds fine.

I aslo noticed on SSB the radio only swings to 5 watts is this right too?Thats on the radio's meter. All my other meters are RMS so I realy cant get a good reading of PEP.But if you guys are telling me this radio will not dead key 40 watts.I read the ad wrong.Whats confusing is that I should see the same dead key on all 3 of my meters RMS or PEP no matter what it swings too.
Thanks for all the help

Never go by the meter on any radio. If you only have an rms meter, you should see about 18 watts rms swing on am with the top gun on. The 40 watts is pep power. I would check the ssb power with an external pep meter before I made any adjustments.

I don't know what kind of meters you have, but it isn't uncommon to see a slightly different reading from a different meter (excluding the radio's meter, it may be way off).

Your swr will effect the wattage reading also. I don't know for a fact, but one meter could be more effected by swr than another.

Ya I agree it must be my meter.I need to get a good pep meter anyway. But Iam still not getting even 18 watts into my rms meter and into a 1K dummy load SWR is Flat.I did look inside and the VR13 was all the way up and the vr16 was just barly cracked. But I guess itll have to do untill I get a good meter.
Thanks for all the Help!
