I really liked the Cobra 148GTL when Uniden was makeing them. Is this new re-itroduction of the 148GTL the same board design as the one Uniden was makeing for Cobra? Is Cobra still useing that RCI8719 PLL in place of the tried and true MB8719??? IS the RCI8719 PLL stable as long as people do not try to free band the radio? Thanks Guys!!!!

After owning and using 2 of the new introduction 148GTL's and 2 of the Sound Tracker 148's only 1 of the Sound Trackers did not developed problems. Like its hit and miss with Cobra. I would not recommend a China built 148 for a serious operator.

Opps forgot. The pll is mmb8719. Its not the same as the older 148's. I tried to reprogram the pll with no luck but someone may know the correct procedure. Have not found that person yet.

I am really trying hard to find a great SSB type aproved 40CH CB radio. Is it any wounder so many people run export gear on CB!!!! Well lets hope my Palomar SSB 600 can be fixed at an affordable rate.

It is a shame that Uniden and Cobra are content with being mediocre and offering mediocre products.Something that I do not understand is why their are so many AM/FM radio's but so few AM/SSB radio's. Once you have AM all you need to do is filter half of of the carrier away to make SSB but with FM you have to have completely diferent section on the board.It seems like it would be easier and cheaper to do an AM/SSB then to do AM/FM with no SSB.

I've wondered the same thing. So many AM/FM only rigs and few SSB rigs. How could FM prevail over SSB? I really doubt that there is more people using FM than people using SSB. Why even bother with FM. What I think is that all these wonderful radios with only FM/AM are going to be shipped all over the world. The primary mode in the USA is AM and only a fraction of 1% of cber's even toy around with FM. I believe that in a country like England the primary mode is FM and very few of them ever use AM. So somewhere in the world right now 2 guys are having this same discussion only they feel that AM is unneccasary. So the way I see it, worlwide the 2 most used modes are AM and FM for 99.999% of all local QSO on 11 meters. SSB is basically used by DXer's worlwide and has nowhere near the amount of AM/FM users worlwide. Just the truck drivers alone make up a huge portion of 11 meter users worlwide. You ever heard a truck driver on SSB?
So Johnbrowning if a radio manufacturer only built radios with AM/SSB they would have basically ZERO or very little market in foriegn countries that the AM mode is illegal for use on the 11 meter band. Would sell like hotcakes in the USA just like type approved cb's do but we are talking exports and without the FM mode you really could'nt call them exports but one really illegal cb. A FM/SSB radio would sell really good in England for example but who would want one in the states?
I wish that there was a radio builder who you could contact and put in an order for a custom rig with only the features you want and do not want. It would be a personalized radio that every feature you had would be used.
