I was wondering if anyone had some insight as to why when I flip my preamp on that an incoming signal of 9 units drops to a 1? It used to work like a charm now its the exact opposite, used to go from a 3 to a 9 when flipped on! What happened and what do I need to do to fix it?

First off make sure all coax and connectors
are in good working order. |

most likely your preamp transistor is blown.
i think this is TR6 in your amp.
TR5 is the 2SD1446 (pill).
TR6 is a BF199 which cross referrences to an NTE229,but you must turn the NTE part around 180* for the leads to be right.
im sure there are other cross referrences, but this was the one i found first.

If you are in a pinch you can remove the transistor that controls the preamp relay and run without the preamp. The same can also be acomplished by lifting the leg that powers the preamp relay, this way there is not a chance of losing the transistor.
I ran my KL300p WITHOUT the preamp because I felt it added too much noise (Although I live in the sticks it's an electrically noisy area.)
This will do no harm to the amp and I had better luck pulling in the weak stations without it and using a good radio. With he preamp on I just pulled the RF gain back to normal, I felt the extra gain stage was not needed.
It's not uncommon for the preamp transistor to fail, you probably did nothing wrong.

Well I tried to rib matt and read it wrong, open mouth and insert foot 
I also wanted to add.... The people that have noticed failures presumed that it was due to transients or static. A transistor that has the same gain and is a bit more beefy would be a great find!

Thanks guys, I will pop out TR-6 and see what I can fing locally for a replacement and see if that does it!
