i have one of these amps and its started losing power after i key up unless i stay keyed then it starts to climb again.what do yallt hink it could be?weak or leaking tubes.the tubes in it dont al match so if anyone could tell me the best tube to run in it and where i could order them i would be very happy. |

I'm not real knowledgeable in the tube department but so you don't give up on Copper I'll try to help.
I would say YES it is possible that the tubes are worn, weary from age. Its an old amp so I would imagine the tubes are pretty old. Since it is old it is also possible that other componets might need investigated. Another thing is are you operating the amp correctly? Recommended input from the radio I would imagine is low. I do know this. Varmit is a really good amp. To me it is definatley worth the money to replace the tubes and maybe find a good tube tech to investigate. Also it could be a problem your having with mixed tubes. You want to have matching sets. So if you have different make tubes, some old, some older...that could be the trouble. Very possible??????
Good brand tubes in my opinion are, Eimiac, Svetlana, Amperex, Taylor. Just a few of probably the best tubes out there. If you want to find the tubes you need for your Varmint you should do some research and find out what model tubes go in the Varmint originally and buy the specific rf transmitting tubes you need.

Sounds tyo me like a tube problem. Replace the tubes and do not forget to neutralize the tubes after installing them.
If you talking tube type the the best tube to run is the same one that is in there now as that is what the amp is designed for. Changing to a different tube may cause you more problems than you want to have to handle. If you are asking about brands than just about any brand around is reputable and should give you no problems. |

the reason i think its a tube is 1 tube has a lose metal top.after its been warmed up a while you can key up and it will swing 600 ish then back down to about 400 and ifyou stay keeyed long enuff it will start creepingback up to 600.its at a freinds house ive been letting him borrow it till he gets his box fixed so i cant look to see the exact tubes in it and id rather he didnt open it up.but ill be getting it back soon and id like to get it back to good working order.thanx for all your answers they do help. |
