I have an original model 148-GTL, that has an added item, the likes of I've never seen. It's a small round cylinder. looks to be made of epoxy, part of it is variable power on AM only, VR-10 has been removed and has a variable pot on the back panel and wires going back into the RF output circuit. It has several wires going to other circuits of the radio, one of them picking up power off the 12 volt line as it comes into the radio, another wire going to the microphone jack circuit board, so I'm thinking it might have something to do with modulation. Have any of you techs seen this circuit and what does it do? Other than variable power. After 44 years on CB I'm puzzled.

it's roughly the size of a small thread spool. i've seen 'em in pukey shades of green, orange, blue, etc. 'EES' made them (along with sound modules) probably 10-15 years ago. it was called '*something* modulator'. for $15 or $20 they charged, you could duplicate its performance with the standard diode & clip mod, then just wire it to your squelch control, or an added pot. probably no reason to remove it if audio reports are OK. i have the instruction sheet for a sommerkamp ts2000dx(rci2950) & a president jackson export. couldn't find any papers on XL/148. i can scan & post or email if interested, carl.
there was also another 1 years ago, the 'supertalk kit', about the size of an XD or SD memory cards' box. i've seen a lot of those, & have an XL somewhere with 1 in it that works just fine.
they were just scams to get CBers to spend money. not that they DIDN'T work, they were just 'snip & clip' mods that you had to pay for. |

Hi Pat, Yes it is as you've said and green in color. Please do scan what info. you might have on this circuit. I'm interested in the full features of what this is and does.
Thanks to all who might have info. on this what ever it is. And yes, it's all in working order with loud audio.

Sounds a lot like the M80 modulator.
Its a dial a watt/modulator like Pat said. They are ALL OVER the "E" auction site.
They show tremendous swing barefoot to the point where the recieving ends meter looks like a windshield wiper  Impressive looking if your into that sort of thing but I've yet to see it make any difference when/if the hot box gets turned on.
If its already there I'd leave it JUST for the added feature of having the dial a watt....as far as the the swing kit side? I'm with Pat on that feature..."Gimmick" but at least you didn't pay for it.

Thanks Hank, at least I'm getting a little closer to finding out just what it does do, now if I can get Pat Double Zero to post the information he has on it, I'll know more. Yes, it does look somewhat like an M-80 firecracker. As for the dial a watt it's only connected into the AM output power circuit, although it's possible it might have something to do with sideband as it has several wires going to the printed circuit board.
 Just no good DX conditions to get a good signal report on the sideband audio with the rig.

Pat Double Zero, thanks a bunch any information on this modulator or whatever it is will be of some help. Does the green color mean anything as far as a model of the unit?
